York British pocket knifes

Good evening folks,
I’m new AAPK and I’m hoping some out there can help me to identify some knives that I recently inherited.
I believe they’re all British, with several having J.M. Smith York on the blades.while others have Smith York or Venture Sheffield England. All appear to be NOS!!! I’ve also got 4-5 one blade “Corn Knife”s still in their paper wraps.
I’d love to post photos though I’m unsure as to how do it on this site:)

Great looking group of English knife history! I don't know anything about Sheffield knives, but some of those look like old ivory.

I think there may be one that has an ivory case …it’s a single blade that I’ve heard could be called a fruit knife

Sorry I can’t help you much with information, but I do admire your knives! Goins’ Encyclopedia of Cutlery Markings states Venture is a trademark used by H.M. Slater Ltd, Sheffield (c 1853-1991). In addition to Venture they used the trademarks “H.G. Long & Co.”, “John Copely & Sons”, and “J. Crookes”.

It will be difficult to find comparable sales of knives from those relatively obscure makers, from which to determine values. Best bet is probably to research completed sales of similar Sheffield-made or other English-made knives of that era, condition and materials. (Keep in mind that “rare” does not necessarily equate to valuable - value is determined by demand as well as supply). There are reference books dedicated to Sheffield (and English) cutleries’ history but unfortunately I don’t have any.

I have looked in my "Tweedales Encyclopedia of Cutlery Markings" and found nothing of York knives or Venture knives.
I looked in my "London Knife Book" and found nothing of York knives or Venture knives.

You have some fine and beautiful knives.

I wish I could have been more help.

Until something better comes along I think Ken has provided you with the best insight.
