I purchased 6488 green bone congress that is early 1990’s and is stamped case xxx. I can’t find many details on the tripple x. Can anyone enlighten me on the significance of the 3 x’s. Thanks

I don't know anything about the particular knife you purchased but can tell you that the old Case triple X stamping was always a false legend back in the day. There were the old timers that asserted that the super rare Case triple X knives were of the finest quality but unfortunately, they were also only a legend and never actually existed. Again, not knowing about your knife but knowing of this triple X legend I would venture to guess that Case marketing decided it a worthy project to make your knife with the XXX stamp.

In the Case Classics series, Parker had a very limited number of knives made with the CASE XXX stamp. An attempt to play on the legend that Wayne mentioned about Case Tripe X.

Parker's triple X knives are very sought after by Case Classics collectors.

I do not recall which patterns he had made or the quantities.

The AAPK reference section description of the Case Classic 2100 Saddle Horn writes it is one of three Case Classic patterns that were made with a XXX stamp. The other two were the 394 Gunboat Canoe and the original poster's 488 large Congress. Speculation on their XXX stamp being an attempt to capitalize on the rumored old time superior XXX knives is a fine theory. However, since the three patterns stamped XXX are three of only four Case Classic patterns that were made in house by Case I prefer to believe the XXX was to distinguish them from non-Case Classic production for the benefit of Case's warranty repair operators. Your guess may be better than mine.

Looks like a “Case Classic”. All but 4 patterns were made by Queen, never saw the inside of a Case factory. I was aware there is a Case Classic XXX Saddlehorn pattern but this is the first XXX Congress I have heard of, so input from a knowledgeable collector of Case Classics would help.

If you’re curious about Case Classics, they are a line of “made to be collectable” knives from the mind of James Parker. It’s confusing especially for newer collectors. Rather than trying to explain that complicated situation here, there is a lot of info about Case Classics available on AAPK by using the keyword search.
