1840 Multi-blade pocket knife

Hi! New member here. I recently acquired this mystery pocket knife presumably made in 1840 or before. I know nothing about knives but it appears handmade? There are 24 very similar thin blades. The mother of pearl discs on the front and back of the knife are inscribed. The front reads "from Uncle Carlton New York". The back reads "L.A. Williams 1840". I can't figure out why someone would need 24 very similar blades. I consulted with a knife collector friend who was also stumped. Another person guessed maybe the knife was used in button making? I'd welcome any information about this knife, the maker and it's purpose.

It looks to me like a presentation knife. For display in the window of a store. Basically a combination of "knife art" and advertising.

Definitely looks similar. Thanks so much that is so helpful! I guess my question is why 24 similar blades? These other presentation knives seem to have a variety of implements in them but this one does not. Just blades.

Interesting and rare find. Looks like an exhibition knife, or as stated a presentation knife. They weren’t made to be used for any practical purpose, only to demonstrate and “show off” the skill of the cutler who made it, in hopes of attracting more business.

During the 19th century it was common to have Exhibitions (like “Worlds Fairs” and trade shows) at which various industries, artisans and businessmen displayed their wares. Exhibits were judged and awards given those judged to be winners. The winners in turn would advertise their products as exhibition winners.
