Strangest (and worst) experience that I have ever had buying on ebay

This seller had a mint looking Case Tested riggers knife listed on eBay.

i asked what I believed to be a simple polite question:

Hi; do both the blade and the spike open and close properly with strong spring action?

The seller responed as follows:

Yes, of course, however if you are super critical and going to be an issue kindly do not bid on items that you don't understand.

To which I responded as follows:

Thank you. I have collected Case pocket knives for 50 years and I have written two books about Case pocket knives. So I do understand them.

The seller's response:

Good for you, that's great, however in today's world, and this platforms allegiance to buyers with no protections afforded sellers we must proceed cautiously. I think it maybe best for you to look elsewhere. We are not interested in renting merchandise, without recompense. All items are available for personal examination in person. Over 500 similar knives will be listed over the next few weeks and we cannot deal with buyers who do not understand these items.

To make a long story short, I had already placed a bid onj the knife and my bid WON and I paid; then the seller cancelled the sale and relisted, and blocked me.

Clearly this seller has some issues.

He has a lot of other knives listed. Just musing - I wonder how this seller would react if other collectors asked him simple polite questions about his knife listings?

Not that I would EVER ask other AAPK members to politely ask him simple questions about his knives just to see how he reacts. I would NEVER ask that even though it would be fun. A lot of fun. No no I could never ask that others ask him simple questions just to irritate him because he treated me poorly. That would be wrong.

Sounds a lot like a seller I dealt with here in the store unfortunately, just no making sense of their horrible ramblings and actions, it left me a little livid. Your seller however broke protocol and could be reported.

It was probably a scam and the seller knew you would spot a fake.

I have asked questions of knive sellers both here and on ebay. Some answer and some don't. If they don't I don't bid or buy.

Looking at other auctions by this seller he has 2 delrin handled knives listed as bone. Looks like the seller doesn't understand knives very well. Can be hard to fix stupid. I wrote and told the seller the 6488 listed is delrin and not bone as described. Will see if I get e polite response.

Looking at other auctions by this seller he has 2 delrin handled knives listed as bone. Looks like the seller doesn't understand knives very well. Can be hard to fix stupid. I wrote and told the seller the 6488 listed is delrin and not bone as described. Will see if I get e polite response.

Thanks - I am mainly curious as to whether this seller treats everone poorly since he responded with vitriol to me and blocked me for asking a simple question.

The seller sounds like he is an amateur with knives. Probably deals in various estate sale buyouts, so knows just enough to be dangerous, and rude.

If you go in and read the comments, they have left after receiving bad feedback you can see they are very vindictive people. They never do anything wrong, and it is aways the buyer's fault. I wonder if they're not at the point where eBay has contacted them concerning their feedback and DSR ratings and are trying to avoid getting more unwanted comments and maybe being suspended. Yet another clear indication that eBay does not remove negative comments from power sellers. These people have a sack full.

Its funny, I see all these comments about Ebay like no "serious" collector would shame themselves on it, but its still the largest selection of knives on an international scale you will find...am I wrong? Ya gotta watch yourself and risk that you might get taken, but I find that true of any sales not done specifically in person. (and even then...). No rant, no bashing, just an opinion.

PS, I just picked up a kind of fun and unique piece there, will share it once it arrives. It too had a totally mis-leading title and description but I knew what I was looking at and pulled the trigger on it. Paid too much but I "needed it!!"

and that right there is where eBay and I depart, I’m looking for a curated selection of knives from a handful of trusted dealers, not the largest selection of knives on an international scale but that’s just how I roll, YMMV.

Never received an answer to my eBay message but the 6488 auction was changed to reflect the knife is delrin handled now. The delrin 61048SSP they have for sale is still listed as bone. Good they changed the 6488 but seems the seller knows little about knives and not much about courtesy either.

Auctions are a mixed bag. Sometimes you can end up with a pleasant surprise, like an unmentioned Standard/Crandall/Case family knife. And sometimes it's an unpleasant surprise, like no pile scale or pearl pin cracks. Just depends on how much green you're willing to risk.

That's about right. Benefit really is being able to find something specific you might be after or that is otherwise hard to find, or that you never knew existed, or that you didn't even know you wanted. It's just a vast marketplace.

As previously said Ebay is a mixed bag. Some sellers never respond to your
questions- about 40%. Automatically no sale from me.

Some sellers change the listing if you point out an error. Some never thank
you.

I find that most sellers who know about knives and are enthusiasts treat you
very well. Massive buyers of estates don’t do much for you to make a sale.

EBay has really changed in the 20 years I have bought things. Not for
the better.

Gary; I beleive that the 3246 was ok, the handles looked original to me. I was just shocked that I was treated that way after politely asking a simple questtion about the knife. Hope you have better luck if the seller has anything that you are interested in.
