Hope no one here is bidding on this

Post by Mumbleypeg »

Looks like another fake Case whittler on eBay. “ Vintage 5308 Case XX Stag Pocket Knife Whittler - No Cracks & Tight! 1940-1964”. https://www.ebay.com/itm/405984592298?_ ... p_homepage

Case discontinued the stag 5308 during the TESTED XX era, and it was not made again until sometime in the 1970s or 1980s, IIRC as part of a stag whittler set. The listed knife has signs of a shaved, re-stamped tang. (Note the upswept shoulder grind line - it should be straight across from choil to spine). The pattern number may be re-stamped also, or the knife may be one from the stag whittler set that has been altered.. ::shrug:: The shield is an “open C, short S” example, which was common in XX U.S.A. era into the 1980s. Oddly the knife appears to have been used and carried. ::hmm::

Caveat emptor!

Yes; made out of a 70's 6308. Before one even analyzes the knife, Case never made a 5308 in the XX era. Tested, yes, XX, no.

Possible a "replacemennt" blade? Case has been known to repair knives sent in for warranty work with different stampings/ models. They way this knife looks like somones EDC i would guess somone sent it into case sometime( awhile ago) and it was repaired

That is not a legitimate Case stamp, and they didn't make a 5308 in the XX era. Those stamps appear to have been done to deceive the future buyer. Also, if the blade was replaced in the Case repair shop, they would most likely install a newer blade (if it would even fit) before installing an older blade into a newer knife.

I see the option to contact the seller. Has anyone done that?

I bookmarked it to see how high it will go. ::mdm:: Currently at $125 with 3 ½ hours to go.
