black micarta texas lockhorn

The W.R. Case & Sons Cutlery Company has a very rich history that began in 1889 when William Russell (“W.R.”), Jean, John, and Andrew Case began fashioning their knives and selling them along a wagon trail in upstate New York. The company has produced countless treasures and it continues to do so as one of the most collected brands in the world.

Interesting ....
Use the Research tab at the top of the page. Your tang stamp indicates 1980 - 1989
I can't make out how many dots are there.
Seems unlikely the handles are micarta; the material was not in Case's repertoire that early.

Certainly this post will draw the attention of those who know more than me, esp. Mr. Pfeiffer

Maybe I'm seeing one dot left of the lightening bolt SS under the C? That would date it 1989.

Describing handle materials that get a 10 the AAPK research area writes "Case has manufactured a few special factory orders, and a limited number of standard issue knives (Lockhorn in particular) using micarta." Since the Lockhorn does not have a pattern number I assume that like Muskrats it is not stamped 10 or any other number identifying handle material. The handle appears to have a layer of white sandwiched between two layers of black. Could it be Packawood which is laminated wood?

Since it’s stamped “PROTO” it may have been made with some kind of black material just to see what it looked like, or if the material was suitable and workable, etc. ::shrug:: Some folks collect those prototypes and one-offs. I count 10 dots, which makes it a 1980 manufacturing date,
