Supplier Wanted

Hello,

Does anybody know of a supplier that can provide the black Valox (ala Buck 300 series) or simulated jigged bone Delrin material? I have a Buck 307 with a melted scale that I would like to replacewith new material. I also have several knives that currently have simulated bone Delrin that could use some refreshing.

I don't have an answer to your question but just a heads up that those black sawcut handles can be a challenge to remove because of their indestructible construction. It can be done but it's kind of a PITA.

The handle slabs start off with "posts" on the backside. The posts are placed through the holes in the liner and then melted and sanded smooth. The little ridges inside the liner circles "lock" the handles in place to keep them from separating from the liner. You'll have to slide a sharp, thin object between the handle and the liner to cut the melted posts in order to remove the handles. The shield is the same piece of steel as the liners and bolsters.

The knives with the oblong shields like yours have the pillar shields, in the case of a 307 the pillar shield knife would have three springs. The older knife would have an oval shield and two springs. These knives have a glued-on sheet metal shield.

Thanks to all of you for your replies. I always learn something new on this site. I did not know that the knife utilized a pillar shield and that funky way of attaching the Valox covers to the liners. It sounds like I will need to CAREFULLY disassemble the knife and cut the Valox away from the liner. I can then use it as a pattern to make a new cover if I ever find the black Valox.
Do you think that I could get the Valox directly from Buck? I asked them about repairs and they told me that th knife is out of production and if I sent it in to them the best that they could do would be to replace it with a new 301... not something that I would want. I never did ask them about buying some Valox though.

I suppose it wouldn’t hurt to ask Buck but I can’t imagine them selling you a piece of raw Valox from their stock.

You might be better off ordering some jigged bone or any material of your choice from a supplier. You will sacrifice the indestructible construction of your knife but you really can’t avoid that if the melted handles on your knife are unacceptable.

The current handle slabs aren’t going to detach under any imaginable circumstances. If you glue on new slabs, the adhesive might eventually fail. But it certainly would look a lot better.

All Buck 307s were made by Camillus. They are 4 1/4" two spring Stockmans with 440A blades. Camillus sold the pattern with both stainless and 1095 carbon blades with their own brand on them. Camillus also made the pattern with 1095 blades branded Remington. After Camillus closed SMKW auctioned a few that were assenbled with a mix of Remington, Buck and Camillus branded parts.

Well Railsplitter you were right! I am still recovering from the laughter that I received from the Buck customer service rep when I asked about buying some valor from them. The laughter was boisterous and hearty and followed up immediately with a resounding NO! I am going to take some advice from this group and install new rigged bone scales. The knife won't be original but at least it will be usable. Thank you to all who responded to this.
