Did cutting my finger while whittling as a kid qualify me as an expert? Cocobolo is commonly used for fancy handgun grips and rifle stock pistol grip caps and fore end tips. All of it that I have has dark brown, black and orange grain stripes so I'd say no. It looks more like burl maple but there are many tree species with light tan wood.

Thank you for your reply . The knife is a west- cut XWW 66 .In the 1941 catalog pages it is describe as having cocobolo wood handle ..The O.P. Pictures are from a eBay offering .I have 1 XWW 66 that I also believe is from the 1941 offering in my small collection .The wood from this knife also seems to also be to light in color for cocobolo with different wood grain ? It could be that western used an other species of wood due to price and availability for the 1941 Offering of the XW66 .

One complication identifying wood is that it is often stained to the desired color. I do not think your knife is teak but its color reminds me of teak. The teak I've worked with was more orange. Common linseed and tounge oil tend to turn wood amber color.

Looks like curly birch to me, the grain and color are about spot on with what I've seen. IMHO.

This is the O.P. Knife .A little pricey for what it is in my opinion considering the second knife I pictured I was bought for 35 and in much better shape .
