Unusual Schrade Walden Knife with Ruler Blade - Any Info?

Schrade Cutlery Company was founded in 1904 by George Schrade, and his brothers Jacob and William Schrade. In 1946 Imperial Knife Associated Companies, (IKAC; an association of Ulster Knife Co and Imperial Knife Co) purchased controlling interest in Schrade Cut Co and changed the name to Schrade Walden Cutlery. In 1973 the name was changed to Schrade Cutlery. In 2004 Schrade closed due to bankruptcy.

This forum is dedicated to the knives that are the legacy of this company. This forum is not the place to discuss the replica knives currently being imported using the Schrade name.

Unusual Schrade Walden Knife with Ruler Blade - Any Info?

Post by knifeaholic »

This is one that I could not find in the old catalogs.

3-1/8" closed, all metal. Oddball ruler blade.

Tang stamp is Schrade Walden NY (no USA) so it is an early SW.

Anyone ever seen another one?

I wonder what the purpose of the ruler blade is since it has the odd shape at the tip.

Page 33 of 1926 Catalog E. I would like to have it, but I don't know why, exactly.

A rule like the one shown is referred to as a hook rule. ::nod::

It is an obsession that infects many known as KAS (Knife Acquisition Syndrome). There is, sadly. no cure, as this devious malady feeds on itself. The more you acquire, the more you desire. Odd and/or unusual knives are the strongest triggers. AAPK is the closest thing to KCA (Knife Collectors Anonymous). Take heart, you are not alone!

Very true, very true. However I have reached the 4th stage (been there, done that) and have started to release knives that I still love.

I believe that is specifically designed to hook over the edge of a piece of dimension lumber to see how thick it is.

Here is a very high quality ruler knife. The smaller pen blade is hidden in this image, and the larger pen blade is seen but not heard.

That's an interesting ruler, too. ::tu::
I wasn't familiar with the company, Garrett Wade, so as we all know, the internet is usually or friend. They sell some fine-looking tools, their statement says they are "Heirloom Quality Tools".
I wonder who made the ruler/knife you have?

Good for you. I can’t even let go of the knives I don’t know what possessed me to buy, ones I don’t know when/how I acquired nor ones I don’t like. And I won’t throw away knives that are junk. ::shrug::

Be careful buying from GW, I’ve seen were they over charge for clones, and imply they are originals. For a while they even had a fake Buck 110, selling for more than a real 110.

The add told all about the knife. Then said genuine leather sheath, made in USA. Giving the impression the knife was made in USA. Very deceptive. After that I wrote off GW.
