My wife says: " you should have a Instagram page to show your work"

After two weeks on the Insty I hear other knife makers complain about getting blocked and where they can't, show their craft.

Is there some way AAPK can accommodate these artisans? AAPK seems designed for the collector, not the maker. Maybe there is a way to even that exposer on the forum. It seems like a win for everybody.

This is a podcast co-hosted by AAPK's own Mason (Neal Punchard) and Mike Moran (Custom Knife Maker).

You should also check out viewtopic.php?t=82321&hilit=mission+20+ ... ore+values which has this vision statement about collaboration: "We understand the value of collaboration and that partnerships within and outside of AAPK foster a cooperative spirit based on mutual trust. We envision collaborating on shared initiatives that benefit the broader knife community, including publishers, knife clubs, manufacturers, and other like-minded groups."

I will work with Bryan to make sure that finding a way to showcase knife makers is a part of the actions taken to meet this vision. Thank you for bringing this important matter to everyone's attention!

Thanks for the links and the feedback. There has to be some way to have the attentiveness of a Forum yet the immediate gratification of a social site.

I worked at a Kinkos (long time ago), there was one color copier that was more expensive. There was an overhead sign, one on the flap you pull up to put the original and one where you pay "Stop this is a color copier". People never read it and used it anyway. In short, people like pictures.

Would it be acceptable to post that I am a member of AAPK to help advertise the Forum?

It seems to be that if you show the knives in a nice staged image, it is not offensive to any of the Social Media platforms. It is considered art photography at that point.There are tons of knives images on Instagram and Facebook with no issues there at all.

These makers are using it as a selling platform and that may be their problem. I heard Mike Moran discuss it on his podcast recently. I don’t know the in and out if it but instagram wasn’t really designed to be that and they may be stopping it.

I sympathize with your situation. It seems the popular social media sites are either run by, or cater to the so called “woke”, a minor but loud segment of our society. They live in a bubble of their like-minded associates, condemn and censor any thought or expression that doesn’t align with their own, classifying it as ‘micro aggressions”, etc. There are some social media sites like Rumble which do not censor content (at least, that’s what they claim) and would probably have an audience more receptive to “knife content”.

Having said that, it also seems to me that AAPK does already provide a platform for posts from custom knife-makers. Rossr, hellize, ashwinearl are all custom makers who post their wares, and I assume make some sales accordingly. There are also members who sell the products of custom makers either in their stores or via the Knife Commerce forum. I’m certainly not against enhancing attention to content from custom makers but I wonder if making better use of what already exists would help.

The same could be said about knife repair and restoration. Some of the more frequently asked questions on AAPK are “how can I get my knife repaired” and “someone please contact me if you can repair my knife”. Yet we continually have to advise that they should select someone from the posts in the Knife Repair forum and contact them. Having a dedicated place where knife mechanics could post their area of expertise and contact info would be helpful to folks seeking repair expertise. JMO. With appropriate disclaimers that AAPK is merely providing information, not any endorsement of the competency of work, etc and so on.

true enough Ken but Dave is looking for a way of showcasing those artisans and their crafts outside of forum topic posts. Dave and his brother are working on a proposal to foster collaboration that benefit the broader knife community beyond posting in the forums. I say bravo to the inspiration and the perspiration

Great! It was not obvious to me that’s what the request is. I’m all for it and hope it works out, and provides benefits to both those who have such skills, as well as those who buy their offerings.

Awesome input, my question is: people like the immediate gratification of social media. I think that why it excells for certain subject, not all.

Why reinvent the wheel. Aka: can we have our cake and eat it too.

I'm working on a proposal of a gallery that would basically be a plug-in for the website. It would randomly generate photos from members associated with it. The picture would link to there profile and public links. That's the start of the idea, kinda, sorta..it's a theory right now.

I am grateful to be a part of a group that is open to new ideas.
