Anyone know anything bout this??

Winchester entered the knife market as a manufacturer in 1919 by acquiring two existing knife companies; Eagle Knife Co. of Connecticut & Napanoch Knife Co. of New York. Winchester stepped away from the market in 1942 to focus on war related manufactured products, but re-entered in the late 1980s by licensing its name to Blue Grass Cutlery. Blue Grass had high quality knives made by Queen Cutlery that featured the Winchester brand name for a handful of years until the license arrangement ran its course. Winchester eventually started licensing to other companies & now you will find the brand name used by several knife manufacturers by way of license agreements.

Since no one else is chiming in, I’ll give you a few thoughts from my mediocre memory.
I seem to recall that back in the 70s(?) there were some German ‘Winchesters’ being sold that were not authorized by Winchester Corp. I have owned two that were extra large trappers with bone handles and bar shields with a rifle stamped in the shields. I think I still have one of them somewhere around here. If I run across it I’ll post a pic. To me, these Winchesters looked a lot like Olbertz production (as in Carl Schlieper/Eye Brand). The ones I saw were not as fancy as the one you show here.
I wouldn’t personally put my hand on the Good Book to swear to any of this, but maybe someone more knowledgeable will speak up. I welcome correction on this.

I believe Froe is correct. Made by Olbertz. May have been one of the many different (unauthorized) brands Parker contracted to be made there. Looks like the same inked-on GERMANY.

Thank you both for the replies, I purchased this and another from eBay within the last year. The more I learn about knives - the more I distrust eBay, I’ll leave it at that. Thanks again ,, Tim

Correction, not eBay , some of its users.

Yes there are unscrupulous sellers, and there are ignorant sellers (ignorant meaning uneducated) who either don’t know what they are selling, and/or don’t care. They’re both just out to make a Buck - at the buyer’s expense.

Which is why it is important to be an educated buyer. Education typically isn’t free. Caveat emptor.

Froe's two huge Winchester Trappers match two I own except the shields on mine commemorate 1776-1976. On ebay the same Trappers with the same bone but with a German brand were bid to about double what I had to bid to buy mine. Mine were about $70 each shipped. I used one enough to be able to write that it has hard carbon steel that holds an edge well. Mine are marked Germany the same as Dullest knife's Barlow so I suspected his was made by Olbertz. Anything I could write about their history would be repeating rumors. However, Olbertz made Bulldogs are expensive well made knives as are the Marbles slip joints Parker had Olbertz make.

Yes.
By the way, I read somewhere that one of the founders of Blue Grass (George Smith or Charles Dorton) was involved in the creation of these knives. And since it was the collaboration with Blue Grass that inspired Bill Howard, then to some extent the Germany Winchesters are the ancestors of the GEC  .
