That is what it was labeled on the sample piece. You got me wondering so I looked up Tigerwood decking material, and it didn't have stripes either, and looked like this wood. I also have a piece of decking I kept from a Tigerwood deck my neighbor had built, and it also matches color and iridescence of mahogany but it sure could be. I just finished another knife with whatever it is.____Dave

Gancalo Alves is also known by the name tigerwood and has been widely used by Ruger and others for pistol grips. It has very noticeable stripes that contrast nicely on firearms. That is what I was referring to. If you Google tigerwood there are some very good pictures of the contrasting colors. I wonder if the Tigerwood decking you refer to is a trade name for their particular brand of lumber. The grain and color in your photos sure looks like mahogany, which itself is a very fine wood for many projects.

You really got me curious about the two kinds of wood enough for me to really take a close look at them both from my samples. Some parts look like the same species but the weight was different. Now I'm bummed because I really had my heart set on Tigerwood because of it's natural resin. At least it appeared to be easier to sand the last knife I had glued up yesterday. I'll post a picture of these two, both Aerials with deteriorated pictured scales.____Dave

I finished the other two knives I put handle scales on, both Aerial's that had decomposed picture celluloid scales. The two blade didn't turn out as well as the three blade(the swell center one), but they both are now usable knives.I did have my heart set on tigerwood and am now pretty sure I had the species of wood wrong. Mahogany is a little prettier, but the resin in tigerwood is way better._____Dave
