old knife

Post by Nosinden »

I'm trying to get some info on an old case pocket knife. The tang is stamped Case over the XX w/ no dots or other markings. The knife has two blades and is small. Only about 2.5 inches when closed and very narrow. Looks like some type of imitation mother of pearl. Could be real but I do not know. The longer blade has the Case XX marking on 1 side and the numbers 923 on the other. These are the only markings on the knife. The handle does not have the trademark case oval on it. I cannot find any info on a knife with the numbers 923.

Agree, "9" is the pattern code for "cracked ice" or "imitation pearl" and "23" is a 3-5/8" slim, swell-center jack, like the one pictured above.
The CASE over XX is c.1940-1965.(Ref: Levine's Guide,pp.100-101). Might want to check the closed length on it. Post some pics if you can. Like to see it. J.O'.

Probably going to need pictures to positively identify it. Try to take some clear, in-focus close-up pictures of the knife and all stamps. Blades in half open position will give the best view of stamps. Are you sure it’s 2-1/2 inches closed length? That’s very small - offhand I can’t think of any Case patterns that small except the x229-1/2 “Tadpole”.

Could be a 9233, a small serpentine pen knife, 2 5/8" in length. You just might not see the final "3" in 9233. Can't think of any Case pocket knife pattern with only 3 digits, probably is one, but I can't think of it.

Good call. For reference here’s an old Tested XX 9233 from my pile. The OP may be able to compare it to their knife - should be similar except for the stamp.
