Gerber sportsman identification

In 1939 Joseph Gerber (advertising agency owner) had custom knife maker David Murphy make 24 sets of carving knife for some of his select customers. Catalog retailer Abercrombie & Fitch saw them and was so impressed with the quality of the knives they wanted to sell them. Thus was born Gerber Legendary Blades.

Gerber sportsman identification

Post by johnjp86 »

Can anyone help me identify this Gerber knife? I haven't seen another with the six point star engraved on the handle. Thank you!

My first impression, John, is that the star was carved in there by the previous owner, ::hmm:: I highly doubt it came from the factory like that. ::undecided::

::welcome:: to AAPK! ::handshake::

I rceived the two Gerber pocket knives, posted below, as awards for my attendance AND a service anniversary with Pacific Bell. That "star" is or was the Pacific Bell/Pacific Telesis logo. I do not remember exactly when, but I received them in 1984-1985.

Thank you for your reply. I was leaning towards your answer the more I scoured the Internet. I would also like to know, how to find the exact year this model was made. Thank you!

My apologies for the misinformation I posted, John, at least someone had the correct facts for you. ::handshake::
It just didn't look like something that would be on that knife, IMO. ::hmm::

Gerber produced the "Folding Sportsman" series from 1974 through 1997 in three sizes. Yours is the smallest (FS-1) and was produced 76-97. At some point during that span Gerber changed the blade grind, but I don't know just when. It is interesting to note that New Windsor NY's knives exhibit the two different grinds. He states he received both knives 1984-85, so perhaps the change occurred shortly prior to then.
The FS-1 was used extensively for promotions and awards. Many are found with 10 and 14 carat gold emblems, and in jewelry cases marked "O C Tanner".
