Are GEC Resale Prices Getting a Little Out of Hand (even if they only go up)?
OK, ...
...Have I lost touch with GEC resale pricing?
... This add states; "Will only increase in value" as a statement of FACT! ... It does not state; MAY increase in value ... It clearly states; "Will only increase in value"
... So, at a cost of $59,900 ...
you can only MAKE money on this baby! YOU can't LOSE!
....
And if you are asking yourself; "Self, what does almost $60K get me?" ...
Well you get FREE shipping!
The bad news for me is that I am just a broke 'Ol country boy,
I can't come up with $60K ... can anyone help me spell "Ruff-Rider .Com"? ...
The bad news for me is that I am just a broke 'Ol country boy,

when I saw that ad my first reaction was the seller fat fingered the price it's $599.00
Its still a high price and there are many more here and on other sites with crazy high prices
some have been listed for a year or more and the seller still doesn't get it or doesn't care if it sells

The ad has been adjusted to $599.

Scary thing with inflation we may look back at these prices and see them as bargains.
My Dad used to tell me about the barrels full of 1911’s for $12 each. I asked him why he didn’t buy some. He said it seemed like a lot of money.

It’s amazing how quickly prices have increased - really on everything, so I suppose knives are no exception. I know this goes back a ways, but just look at the prices of these knives from a 1952 Sears catalog.

But people were making $2 an hour.
I just checked the census from 1952 has the average yearly pay at $2300! So those knives were about an hours pay for a lot of people.

So how much should "just a pocket knife" cost?

Re: Are GEC Resale Prices Getting a Little Out of Hand (even if they only go up)?
It’s a fair question that I don’t have the answer too. I just know that $600 is too much.
Those knives from the Sears catalog were decent quality and cost about an hours pay. Can you still buy a decent American made pocket knife for an hours pay?
I guess the real problem is it isn’t just a pocket knife is it? In fact it will most likely never be in a pocket or used to do pocket knife things. Kind of sad really.
In the end paying a premium for something speculating on it going up is really risky. What if it goes out of style? Or tastes change? The bubble bursts. In the end it could end up being the next beenie baby.

I can't believe how much GEC knives cost on the secondary market.

40 hours a week for 52 weeks = 2080. Even when I entered the workforce in 1970 there were plenty of jobs that paid less than $2 an hour. So figure those knives cost about two hours pay.
You can get a Case pocket knife for $50. That is probably about two hours pay for a worker today.
Personally, I just will not pay $100 for a user. I have paid more than that for pocket knives, but not for one I meant to use. I do have Case knives that I carry and that cost over $50. And I have one GEC that falls into the same category. If I had had a clue how prices were going to go, that GEC would have stayed in the display case!

There's 1 knife in there Tim that doesn't belong!
It's the last one, the Craftsman Carpenter's Knife! All the others are reasonably priced but at $4.50 that one is in a league of it's own! Meant only for the very wealthy! lol!
Oh, btw eveled, I'd like to order a dozen 1911's, I'll PayPal you US$144. right now, and I assume they all come with full clips, right?

Being gone for about 5 years and seeing how things have changed so drastically
I guess I should change my “motto “
From
“life is to short to carry a cheap knife”
To
“it’s impossible to carry a cheap knife”!

The prices on GEC are overinflated, and completely insane. They are good knives but overrated. If people were smart enough to quit buying them, prices would come down. At their current prices, the maker and the resellers can keep them as far as I’m concerned. Maybe if people stopped overpaying for them they would take the hint.

Here is a GEC you can buy on B.H.Q. (IF YOU ARE VERY LUCKY) for $109 or you can buy it from a reseller for $595OSCAR wrote: ↑Wed Oct 11, 2023 4:50 pm The prices on GEC are overinflated, and completely insane. Re: Are GEC Resale Prices Getting a Little Out of Hand (even if they only go up)?
To me, GEC is a conundrum. Very fine knives that would make good users, but way to expensive to use. What I cannot understand is why GEC does not go ahead and raise the prices from the factory. It seems like every knife they sell is immediately put up for resale for at least 150% the factory price: I would much prefer paying that price to GEC than to someone who beat me to GEC's dealer.

Older GECs with low production numbers especially those that will probably never be made again I can see higher prices. Some of these recent high number runs some dealers and flippers are asking way to much most are getting paid the tide will change one day.
