Help with Knife

Post by ehards »

image.jpg
Looking to understand more about this knife. I’d like to restore it so any help on that would be appreciated. I’m assuming I need to remove the two pins on each side. Would love to understand some of the tools also. I recognize the large blade, scissors, awl, small blade with bottle opener and nail file, but that’s about it.

Thank you!

I am unsure of some of those blades as well. The tiny spoon is possibly an ear-wax spoon, since knives with those will usually have a nail file and other "grooming" blades as well.

As far as restoration, I wouldn't take the knife apart unless something is missing or broken. The scratches on the blade can be sanded and buffed out. I would have to know of any other damage to make any further recommendations.

It is a cool knife!

Great to know, I was also thinking it might be a snuff spoon. I was going to try an ultrasonic cleaner but the large blade seems to be worn so the spring is not working and it falls open. Not even sure how to fix that.

I agree with Reverand. That is a fairly complicated knife, and I wouldn't recommend taking it apart as a first restoration project, unless the spring is broken, and then it will need to be disassembled to repair/restore it. If you look inside the blade well, or at the back of the knife, you should be able to see if a spring is broken. There are a few other possible problems (such as a broken pivot pin) that could be causing the primary blade to be loose, as you described. Sorry for the bad news, but none of them are likely to be a simple fix for you.

If you decide to dismantle this plz check out on here how to do it properly, I restore and make knives and I recently bought a badly dismantled case pocket knife , I had to scrap a lot of the parts especially the bolsters as they drilled them out ::dang:: badly damaging them , this is a nice knife so take care , if I was you I would go to a market and find a few cheap knives to play around with ::tu:: good luck ::tu::

Appears to be a "lobster" pattern which means it has internal spring construction. Not as common as a conventional knife construction having a back spring. I'm guessing not a simple fix.

It's a nice old manicure knife, many of them having ornate handle covers are lobster construction "skeleton" knives. I wouldn't recommend trying to repair it unless you're sure what you're doing. Post it in the Knife RepIr and Restoration forum https://www.allaboutpocketknives.com/kn ... m.php?f=37 where many of the knife mechanics here will see it, and mY comment on repairing it. Or just hire one of them to fix it for you. If the blade has a worn tang, or a spring is broken, you will probably need parts from a donor knife or someone competent enough to make parts for it.
