Puma polish

Post by JonTerry »

Hi Guys,

You may of seen that I have found a rare pre 64 Jagdmesser knife, which I am very happy with.

Still not sure if it's a keeper or passer-onner yet, but I do have a few questions about it, which you guys may be able to help with.

First if I decide to pass it on should I sharpen it or leave the edge as is which has a few dings and chips tbh. I can keep what looks like the factory grind but polish up the edge and remove the chips, would this make it less desirable for a collector ?

(I know if I was to buy it I would prefer to put my own egde on it if I was to keep it.)

Second I have attached a photo for ref, How far do you think I can polish/sand out the scratches before going through the stamping on the blade ?
Should I just leave it be ??

Cheers in advance

JT

Jon, when you say “pass it on” are you referring to selling this? If you are, then the most I would do is to clean it and get it shiny. The next owner will most likely like to put on the new edge. If it’s to give as a gift, then by all means clean up the edge and make it sharp. The amount of polishing is a judgement call based on who you would give it to.
When I buy or sell a knife, I like to see what I call “the true knife”, which is without all the crud and corrosion that people leave on a knife from storage or from use. But no buffing. I think of buffing as an attempt to hide “the true knife”.

Thanks mate,

Thats a good guideline to be fair, I guess I have to decide at some point if I will keep and use it, if so I will put a decent edge on it.
If I decide to sell I will leave it alone, and try to figure out a price that I think letting it go will compensate my loss of letting another collector take carwe of it ???

Cheers

Cleaning up the blade finish is a very delicate operation that can easily ruin the markings.
Even a professional restorer can't make the blade look new-just better.
I say leave it alone.

I agree with Bill, it is very difficult to get the scratches out of a blade and if there is an etch on the blade you will probably destroy it by buffing or sanding. I would polish the blade and handle with Walker wax or Renaissance wax. That will help protect them.
