Just got my first storage roll

I just picked up my first roll for storage. Came as a bonus in a recent a bulk knife purchase. Just never got around to getting one before. Loaded it up with some favorites from the stash, looks pretty great! Think I might have to pick up some more!

Hate to rain on your parade but there are mixed reviews on knife rolls - Use at your own risk. There are several threads about them here. I personally have had some bad experience with storing knives in them long term. https://www.allaboutpocketknives.com/kn ... 30#p688173

Knife rolls originated as a practical method for knife salesmen to carry and display samples to show their customers. Hence the name “salesman’s roll”. The contents were continually unrolled and “aired” when shown to potential buyers. IMHO they were not intended for long-term storage. Some folks, including me, have experienced damage to knives stored in such rolls for extended periods of time. Others swear by them. (Since my bad experience I swear at them.) I will not keep knives in mine for more than a few days, but they are handy for transporting and displaying knives at shows and such.

Noticed from your picture what appear to be at least a couple of celluloid handled knives in the roll. Celluloid is notorious for spontaneous “out gassing” disintegration. Celluloid needs to be aired, not enclosed, and if it should go off while enclosed in that roll it will damage other non-celluloids in the roll with it. If you’re not already familiar with the problems of celluloid, search here on the forum for “out gassing” or “off gassing”.

Personally I've hadn't had an issue with the better rolls,like Hickory Hills.Now the folding zipper cases are another thing.I've had the elastic gas out and damage knives( the newer cheapass Chinese ones),and bought an old collection stored in them and the elastic was stuck to the knives.

Roger, sorry to say the problems I experienced were with Hickory Hill. Just as you described, the elastic deteriorated and stuck to the knives, and the knives were pitted by it. The shields and bolsters (nickel silver) were the most damaged. The pitting was bad enough that it couldn’t be removed. Hopefully they’ve changed their materials since then, but I have no way of knowing whether they have or not. My solution since then is Sackups rolls. I’ve picked up a number of used Sackups over the years. I rarely pass them up when I see them available - I don’t think you can wear one out!

Ken,Hickory Hills are no longer made,Lanny Watkins made them and he passed away a few years ago.I don't keep any of my collection in rolls,just sales stock.I also use sackups for my good stuff. ::tu::I also use sackups gun socks.

Problem is the folks who make these and other “storage” solutions typically have no clue what the materials used in making them may have been dyed, manufactured, or otherwise treated, assembled or glued with. Or its long term affects on the various things knives are made of. Most of us know about celluloid but nickel silver, brass, aluminum, steel (even so-called “stainless” steel) etc too often aren’t impervious to residuals of acids and other substances that may have been used in making cloth, felt, leather, Naugahyde, elastics and other plastics. Some of us have learned the hard way.

Lesson learned - if you have much time or money invested in your knives, best spend a little to preserve them (and keep an eye on them). There’s a reason museum archivists take great care to use acid-free paper and similar materials when preserving items and mounting them for display.

I don't store any of my knives in rolls.
I only use them to transport to shows or just "show and tell" with my knife buddys.
When I get back home they come out of the rolls.

I switched all my knives to the Sackups rolls also.
I really like them!

Sack ups get my vote for sure. Says they are treated with silicone to address moisture! They have worked great for me.

I've used Hickory Hill rolls for years for storage without any problems. Stored in a dehumidifed fireproof file without any celluloid knives in the mix.
Has worked great for me!
