Bartenders knife

Post by Mountainwind »

I see this term applied to several brands, does anyone know when the term was first used, and which company first used it?
Case used it in 2003, I have a couple of Camillus bartender trappers (years unknown) and the question was brought up, as to who introduced the "Bartender" knife.

Remigton had a bartenders knife back in the 20's. I'd guess that in the late 1800's the knife was being made by someone, probably in Sheffield. I believe the original name for the pattern was a champagne.

The champagne pattern goes back well into the 1800s. In the early days champagne corks were secured with string. Around the mid 1800s, the string was replaced with a wire cage. The champagne pattern included a stout ridged attachment developed for the purpose of cutting the wire along with a corkscrew and blade. Then the wire became twist off but the pattern was well established. The wire cutter wasn't needed however the hooked blade was maintained but became sharp for foil cutting or was replaced with a cap lifter. Or so goes my understanding. :) s-k

Show us a picture please Mountainwind... ::nod::

The Case knife was configured somewhat like a more traditional "Champagne" pattern. The Camillus Bartender Trapper, IIRC, looks like more of a special gimmick style knife that might've been sold by SMKW. The Camillus knife did include a master blade, and a smaller blade, with opener incorporated into the blade, that they had used for a long time. Below is a 4 line stamped Camillus Champagne style pattern, with the same style blade.....

I sold this Anheuser Busch knife a few months ago for a good profit. Augustus Busch handed them out like business cards to dealersof his product. Several models were made and if I remember correctly were first made late 1870's or early 1880's. For more on these knives Google Anheuser Busch knife. They are quite collectible today.

Here is a similar one made in Germany and imported by A Kastor & Bros circa 1890s-1900.
