WINCHESTER QUESTION

Winchester entered the knife market as a manufacturer in 1919 by acquiring two existing knife companies; Eagle Knife Co. of Connecticut & Napanoch Knife Co. of New York. Winchester stepped away from the market in 1942 to focus on war related manufactured products, but re-entered in the late 1980s by licensing its name to Blue Grass Cutlery. Blue Grass had high quality knives made by Queen Cutlery that featured the Winchester brand name for a handful of years until the license arrangement ran its course. Winchester eventually started licensing to other companies & now you will find the brand name used by several knife manufacturers by way of license agreements.

WINCHESTER QUESTION

This is for a friend. The Winchester in the pic below. When was is it made? By whom? Approximate current value? Not my field of collecting, just trying to help him out. Thanks, J.O',

I've got a 1920 model Winchester with the same scrolling on the blade, I showed it here a few years ago and was told it was a modern reproduction made in Germany. Even though mine is not as old as I thought it's still a very well made knife.
Someone more knowledgeable than me can probably give you more info. Either way it's a good looking knife! ::tu::

It is stamped "Germany". Any ideas on current value? I told him I thought $40 would do it. ?? I'm not in that market. J.O'.

Sounds like a fair price to me.

I had one of those just a few years ago and it was worth about 50 dollars. These were illegal reproductions if my memory serves me correctly.
Mine had dark brown bone handles but the same scrolling on the blade. Once I got past how impressed I was with the “snap”, it had the loudest snap I’ve ever heard on a knife, I looked closer and saw a lot of things I didn’t like. There were gaps between the liners and the springs. The bone wasn’t fit very well against the bolsters and the run up wasn’t impressive at all. I really didn’t like the fit and finish and sold it for what I had in it.
Hope this helps.

SSK: I agree. Not knocking anybody's taste here but I'm just not a fan of foreign (or domestic) remakes. JMHO. J.O'.

Yep, mine has the about loudest snap also.
Whatever factory they were made at they didn't skimp on the backsprings but the fit and finish isn't the greatest.
