Stainless steel is also attracted to a magnet, so I don't think you can make any distinction between carbon steel and stainless steel based on magnetic attraction.

Hello,. I do not own a 31 sab, I'm looking at them on line
The reason for the question , carbon or stainless is some sellers were saying there carbon and some said
Stainless, I prefer carbon, and I wasn't going to buy
If there stainless,. Magnetic or not. Amen

Ebay sellers who do not know knives often make that error.

The fact is, that Case never made the 2231 1/2 pattern in stainless, only CV.

Any Case stainless knife 1979 or earlier will have STAINLESS in the tang stamp.

Thanks knifeaholic, for your info since you brought up
The 22311/2 I bought one some years back,. Just
How close size wise is it to the 31sab. Just by looking on line I cannot see alot of difference between the 2
Other than the handle material. Pic on line can sometimes be decieving. Thanks. Baxter.

Hi Phil,

After reading your comment I had to check and sure enough, checking several SS knives I have (Buck, Case, Queen, KA-Bar), they are all magnetic. So my magnet suggestion wouldn't work. Stainless steel comes in many different grades based on alloying elements and crystalline structure. The 300 series SS, known as austenitic SS, isn't magnetic. Some of the 400 series (ferritic and martensitic) are. A long way of saying I thought most SS knife blades were from 300 series, other than Buck. My apologies to the OP.
