How common is worm groove on Case XX?

Post by DMLEATH »

I have a great looking older knife from the Case XX era with what I believe to be worm groove bone handles. I have looked through the bone section of my “Collecting Case Knives” book and didn’t find much regarding worm groove jigging. Was this a bit uncommon for this era? I did find in mentioned for Rough Black. Thanks for any input you can help me with!

::disgust:: That knife is a real beauty! In my experience worm groove bone is more prevalent on Tested XX era and earlier Case knives than it is on Case XX era knives. My opinion (and it’s only an opinion) is the major supplier of “worm groove” jigged bone was Rogers Manufacturing Company, also supplier of “Rogers” jigged bone. The company ceased supplying bone handle covers sometime in the 1960s. They called their worm groove jigging “Indian Trail” jigging, and you’ll see it on old fixed blades and large folding knives from several cutleries. It seems apparently no one is capable of replicating what Rogers did in making beautiful “worm groove” bone jigging. You see nothing like it coming out today. Perhaps because the density of bone from today’s cattle (which may be slaughtered at a younger age relative to earlier 20th century) isn’t up to it? ::shrug::

Here’s an old post about the company viewtopic.php?f=35&t=45098#p455829
