A Very Special Thanks To Mossdancer

Mossdancer emailed me a few weeks ago asking for my address. I totally forgot about our conversation until I received this Pearl Handled Steak/Fruit Knife in the mail.

I emailed him back to ask why and he just answered because he felt like it and to do whatever I wanted to with the knife.

I wanted to go public and say thank you as soon as I received it but my schedule and the inability to get a photo of this knife has prevented me from doing so...

So from the bottom of my heart and a very special thank you here is the picture of the knife he sent. Please forgive the poor picture, I have literally took a hundred different pics of this knife but cannot get a good picture..Ya'll will have to come down to Florida and stop by the house and I will show it to you in person..

I was trying to find a place to post this. I think this tread will be the best place for it.

Her is a photo of a very meaningful knife that I have not received yet.

It was from a conversation I had about a year ago with Moss about finding a knife that came out the first time in 1948. Which is my B-Year.
He sent me a PM here letting me know this one was for sale on e-bay.
As usual I was confused. It took him about 5 more PM to get it through my head that he would bid on it ONLY if I did not want it. Well I did want the knife that Moss found for me. After even more PM's to me and him I won the knife and one of his last PM's was I got that knife way to cheap, WAY TO CHEAP.
I am sure that he would pay me what I paid for it any day..

So here it is in a nut shell. Moss found it sent me info I won it. Now this is some thing most people do not do. Except I see more and more fellows are like this here at AAPK. than any were else in the world.

Awesome Ralph! What a beautiful looking knife. The pearl handle is incredible! With all the negative stuff going on in the world it's nice to hear that people still do random acts of kindness for others.

That is very generous of you Moss . That is a beauty. I believe it is a fruit knife. Are there any marks indicating the maker? Looks similar to one made by LF & C. IMO s-k

Sunburst there are 6 butter knives on ebay right now with that same pattern and I was going to pick them up for my camping trailer but the ole lady thinks they need to much cleaning and indeed they do need cleaned up but they look like they would clean up very nicely.

P.S. After taking a closer look there is a slight difference in the band between the handle and the blade, still very nice looking handles.

Very true.
This matter of knife giving goes back a looong way and I have only a couple of vague recollections I picked up from what I heard along the way.
One thing is that there is no perceived reason for the gift, and the other is that the receiver subsequently gives a knife to someone else, but never to the giver.
This timeless tradition is played out in Muskrat Man's roundtable, and seals the fact that a knife is never given as a reciprocal gesture, just because one was given in the first place.

Our modern society has somewhat trivialised gift giving to the extent that one gives and expects in return, or one receives and then feels compelled to give in return.
To a man, a knife is not a gesture or a duty.
A knife is given in total freedom and received in total freedom.
I have given knives of value to total strangers whom I would never see again, and I have received knives from people whom I never saw again. The people are gone but the knives stay with me, always.
I can't explain it, but, like Mossdancer, I feel it.

This world is slowly turning into a sad place and I for one do not particularly want to see what the next generation is going to have to deal with if people do not stand up on thier own two feet and accept some responsibility for thier actions, mainly our polititions, all the way from the crossing guard up.
