A Long Shot...

I know this is a long shot, but then again, this forum has a *lot* of collective knowledge, so I am hopeful someone will recognize this...

I had mentioned a lot of knives that I had purchased, with a few good ones in the batch, and some so-so stuff as well as a lot of dreck. This one I can't begin to identify, because the main blade is missing--not broken off, but entirely missing. No tang, no nothing. Looks like the pin had sheared, the knife came apart, and the blade came out. The second blade is in good shape, good snap, plenty of wobble (due to the sheared pin, no doubt). But there is no marking whatsoever. The handles look pretty nice to me, and the fit and finish look pretty reasonably good, too, at least to my untrained eye. The whole thing is a hair over 4" long closed.

I suppose with a proper blade this might be fixed up nicely, but I have no idea where to find one, especially not knowing the maker. Does anyone recognize who might have made this knife? Quite a few in this lot were Imperial and Colonial (shell handle) but this is clearly different...

Definitely Queen. Looks to be Delrin Winterbottom covers.
From a previously sold knife, from Sanders Knife photos... #24...

It probably wouldn't be worth the cost of repair, for the value of the knife. One in very good condition recently sold for $49.
If you tried repair...this is close...it's not the same. It may or may not fit...

Another option, if you were playing around and learning...would be to delete the one side and end up with a single spey blade knife...or just repin and use it like it is. So many choices!

I'd thought about just re-pinning it with an empty slot, but it offends my aesthetic sense. I hadn't thought about removing the spring and making it a thinner single blade knife, but that actually is an intriguing idea.

If it was mine and I turned it in to a single blade...I'd probably reprofile the spay...into a sheepsfoot.

Unfortuately, trying to use a blade for or from a different pattern frequently does not work, for a variety or reasons. To start with, if the tang of the new blade and the spring it will be mated with are not of the same thickness, you will have problems. I have a big collection of "donor" blades and only rarely find a blade in my collection that will work when I am trying to replace a broken blade. Alleghenyliquidators (the seller in the auction link above) bought a lot of the Queen parts stock when Queen went out of business and they have been able to supply me with blades or springs when I was looking for one. You might want to ask them if they have any clip blades for a pattern 24.

I agree with Herb. If you are going to try to put it back right, I would order the correct blade.
If I could not find that exact blade though, I would take out the spring and make it a thinner single-blade knife. That is fairly easy to do, just buy some pin stock before you start (I am guessing that it would be smaller than 1/8", so you could buy 1/8" nickel silver and brass, and turn them down to the size that you need).
Whether or not you reprofile the blade, it would make a great little user!

I was thinking the same thing. There's another blade they have that looks to be the correct length, with a nail nick in about the right spot, but I don't know the thickness. I've sent a message asking for that, and also explaining what I am looking to do. I figure I probably won't hear anything until Monday at the earliest...but I'm not in any hurry.

And if I end up spending some money just to learn a few lessons...well, that's just like everything else in life. It's a lot cheaper hobby than speedboat racing, I tell myself.
