Stockman FAKE ? So many questions

The Remington Corporation and the knives that they built have influenced the U.S. cutlery industry more than nearly any other manufacturer. From the time America was settled, to the end of WWI, American knife companies struggled to compete with Britain and German imports, but events that occurred during and after the First World War led to a great change in this phenomenon. Unprecedented opportunities arose, and Remington stepped up to seize the moment. In the process, they created some of today's most prized collectables. In an ironic twist, the next World War played the greatest role in ending the company’s domination of the industry.

Stockman FAKE ? So many questions

Post by M.TEX »

Ok so this is my first post sorry , I dont know much about Remington knives,,,
I just got a Stockman frim ebay to do some whittling and i think this knife is made of DELRIN and not real bone. After i got the knife I noticed some things that looks like fake (see pics)
fit and finish looks bad...no model number stamp and the center rivet has sharp edges...
Ive seen 1 on google that llos like about the same without serial number but the detais are hard to spot...please let me know what do you think. Thanks

The thing about Remingtons--is that I strongly believe that there are more "Remington licensed" knives than Remington produced knives out there. Remington licensed the name first to Bowen Knife Co., then Camillus, then Bear and Son, and most recently Buck. I've also seen several made in China or Italy. Depending on the maker, quality is all over the place. I think Bowens are the best, and Bear and Son the worst. The Italian-made ones are really good, and Chinese made ones, usually junk.

Not fake at all. Camillus made, 1990s-early 2000s. I have a Remington Medium Stockman with black sawcut pattern Delrin handles, stainless blades, and slanted bolsters. No pattern number on that one either. Quality is decent, but a little off like yours. Interestingly enough, my tang stamp is etched, not stamped. I suspect being made with less quality has multiple explanations. One, I suspect mine (due to an etched "tang stamp") was made near end of days for Camillus in 2007. Secondly, could've been an item free with the purchase of ammunition--I've seen two or three different Camillus made Remingtons bundled with large boxes of .22 ammo. Thirdly, I believe yours was a part of a gift set, which had an imported multitool in it, that was bundled with either your Stockman or a Trapper.

I agree one of the made by Camillus ones. Not a bad knife and it fits well in the pocket. Show us some pics of your whittlings. ::nod:: ::nod::

Pretty sure you are right that the handles are Delrin and not bone. That’s a common mistake people make when listing knives.

MTex, welcome to AAPK. You mentioned carvings, please show us some. At one time I loved carving Santa’s but unfortunately I have lost much of the use and control of my hands. I never was very good but I always enjoyed carving anything Santa.. I’ll post a few since my wife just displayed a few of mine for Christmas. Again, we would enjoy viewing some of your work. John

Thank you both for your kind words. I wish my hands still worked well so I could continue whittling. Maybe someday.

Cool carvings...do you use pocket knives ? or whittling fixed blade ? I like to use pocket knife just because I like the old traditional ways but , I do use fixed blade whittling knives sometimes...

I use carving knives. My personal favorites are Helvie knives. I started collecting pocket knives 53 years ago when I was 9. I have been carving for 35 years but I only carve Santa’s. I carve for myself to relax and have never sold anything ( not that they are marketable). I really look forward to your future posts and appreciate you allowing me to hijack your post. Thank you, John

I think your Santas are outstanding! Those are very nice imo.

So here we go...
Let me explain the pictures...the birs and fishing lure are made of basswood .
The knife is the OLD TIMER 340T
I got some fishing lure material from china ( 2 months ago ) and i will finish as soon i get the stuff .

The other REMINGTON KNIFE ( BARLOW ) RC01 Also from ebay very cheap.
It was very dirt , many rust spots , the blade did not have any have any snap...
The bolster pins were very high and after some work they are sitting a little better .
The is a crack on the DELRIN ? Handle but i will just like like that...
Thank you for watching.
