im pretty happy with both of them. the highland put me back $86.81 the cost of a current production highland and the socom set me back $134.89. you really can't touch a socom for that price, the other one i have was $170 and this one is a classic.

I stumbled onto this thread Gary started and Wham! Just like that one of these Barkies shows up in the mail!
I think it happened somewhere about 97guns post
I've wanted a Bark River w/Green Canvas Micarta for a long time. This is my first B-R and I bought it as a user just to see what it's all about. Man, It's got a beefy convex grind! Looking forward to working with it. Didn't know it had the FPR etch until I unwrapped it.
We'll see how long it stays there.

I remember my first Barkie...for some crazy idea I tried cutting one of those 1/4 inch catalogs--whoosh...right through...so I put two together....whoosh. I was really impressed.
I was so impressed, I bought 500 more.

I talked to Mike Stewart (designer and owner) about that. He doesn't stamp because he doesn't want to weaken the knife at that point. It made sense--especially since his goal is to make high end user knives.
I think a tang stamp would be nice because it would be there forever, where as the etch can fade with use and also can be buffed off.

The black etch that is put on uses AC current and can be buffed off. You can use DC current to deep etch, You can easily etch from .003 to .010 inches using a stencil and DC current with an electrolyte. What I do is to deep etch with DC current to about .004 or .005 inches then use AC current to make the deep etch black.okbohn wrote:I talked to Mike Stewart (designer and owner) about that. To remove a deep etch that is black would ruin the knife. You would have to grind it off.
