Taking care of an I488 Mammoth Ivory Large Congress

The W.R. Case & Sons Cutlery Company has a very rich history that began in 1889 when William Russell (“W.R.”), Jean, John, and Andrew Case began fashioning their knives and selling them along a wagon trail in upstate New York. The company has produced countless treasures and it continues to do so as one of the most collected brands in the world.

Taking care of an I488 Mammoth Ivory Large Congress

Post by comfixr »

I've been searching for ways to store & take care of the scales on this one, but after all the reading, im not sure what would be the best products to use. Im hoping you guys might have some info like, should I use mineral oil, baby oil, or just what would be the best from your experience.

If I owned that beauty, I’d use a light coat of Rennaissance Wax which can be found in lots of places. Thanks for sharing such a great looker.

With the nooks and crannies of the mammoth...I wouldn't be too concerned about getting the wax in to every crevice...but, you might need an old toothbrush to buff any that gets in to them.

Keep in mind that it sat in the ground or a glacier for approximately 15,000 years, so I would think that it'll be just fine if you leave it as is. It's not going to dry out, it's pretty much stone at this point.

I agree with Eric. I don’t think you need to,do anything to preserve the handle covers. But I also don’t think a little Renwax will do it any harm if it makes you feel better.

I've got Ren Wax. Not sure Im up for trying to shave with it lol. I appreciate all the comments, I wasn't sure if it was a must to use mineral oil or something of that nature on the handles.
