Knives value?
My father passed away and I have inherited his knife collection and need to sale them for a fair price. There are 80 knives but the ones below are the ones of noted value. They are in mint condition a few have the original box, but most have been stored wrapped in felt bags. I have an offer to sale all of them but it seems like a low offer and I wanted to get an experts opinion on what a fair price would be. I do not know how much effort there is in selling these one at a time, nor do I knwo how much demand there is. I have estimated from online reserach that the total list below is valued at $2,300. I was offered $400 for the 80 knives. Can anyone share thereopinion with me there fellings if $400 is a fair price?
Thank you
Ryan

Re: Knives value?
Greetings, Ryan...and welcome to AAPK. Hope you stay around and join the fun.
I can't help you much on the value of any of your knives...however, just following my gut instinct, some of your older Case knives alone could be worth $400.00, depending on the rarity and the collectors desire. There are a lot more knowledgeable Case collectors here than me, so be patient and someone will be along to give you more insight on what you have.
I know it would be rather time consuming for you to post photos of the knives, but if you could possibly provide photos of some of the older Case knives, showing closed and open photos, it would greatly help in providing the information you're looking for.

$400 seems extremely low.

Re: Knives value?
The first 8 Case knives would sell in the $60-$100 range each. It is a bit of a task to sell all the knives individually but it will bring you by far the most money. It's easy to sell them on ebay but they do take about 13% of the sales price as a fee. Dealers will offer you about 30% to 50% for the whole collection.

Re: Knives value?
$400 is a low ball offer, that would calculate to only $5 per knife. Should be worth more than that.

Re: Knives value?
Condition is very important in getting the most for your knives. $400 seems extremely low to me, too. If you didn't want to sell individually, you could break the knives up in , say 10 lots of 8 knives...a little of each in the lots...and sell on Ebay. I'm thinking you would get way more than $400.
Having just re-read your entry...about mint knives...unless you ae really pressed to get rid of them fast...I'm with Greg on selling individually or 2-3 knife lots. Most knives are like buying / selling commodities of gold / silver. There is a very good market (especially for the Case knives). No one will get lucky and walk away with one of those for $10. They will sell at a relatively "fixed" rate. Take your time and I think you'll be closer to the $2000 number, than the $400.

Re: Knives value?
Hi and welcome!
I'm with the other guys - you're probably closer to accurate with your estimate of $2300 than on offer of $400.
I don't do ebay, so I'm not familiar with the ins and outs, but I do know many will search the SOLD items to get an estimate of value, and value, of course, it what someone is willing to pay for an item.
Someone smarter than I am will be along soon.
edit: see? even while I was typing, people were showing up

Re: Knives value?
Ryan,
So, I re-read your original post and noticed that you stated that; "The list below is valued at $2300.00. You have 30 knives listed, so that means you have 50 more that you didn't even mention. If the 30 knives listed is approximately valued at 2300.00, then your collection will be worth much, much more...depending on what you have. Nevertheless, like others have mentioned, TAKE YOUR TIME and decide how you want to sell your collection and get the most value from it.
My condolences for the loss of your father. You didn't mention whether he had a price list or receipts for his knife purchases. That would make your endeavor a bit more easy. Again, as others mentioned, many dealers WILL lowball you on price. You deserve a fair market price for your collection, so take your time and do your research, ask questions and educate yourself so you get the most value. If you're in a hurry to sell, then set a price you believe to be fair for all 80 knives and stand firm. Set a price you will not go below. Again, this should be based on your research and the knowledge gained so that you too can present a fair market price.
Good luck in whatever direction you take.

Re: Knives value?
I also think $400 is a ridiculous offer. But, before anyone can give you an informed opinion, they either need to examine the actual knives in person, or at least see good pictures. The best return for you would be to list each knife individually on ebay with good pictures and good, detailed descriptions. That is a lot of work and you have to know what you are doing. There are some experts here on AAPK who would give you a reasonable price for your collection and save you a lot of work if you decide to go that route.

Re: Knives value?
I took it he meant some of the individual knives might be worth $400. However I don’t see any $400 knives on that list.
Sorry for the loss of your father. Your best source of current values is an advanced search of sold listings on eBay. You have in your list everything you need to do such a search. Knife pattern, year, descriptions. Just select “sold listings”, put that description into the search field and submit. You’ll get something that looks similar to this: https://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_nkw=19 ... 1&_fosrp=1
In valuing collectable knives condition is paramount, so check the responses from your eBay search against the condition of your knives to be sure you’re comparing apples-to-apples. In this instance some of the results are used knives so if your knife is mint, you’ll need to throw those used knives out those used knives from your search results. You can try inserting “mint” into your search string but that may be too restrictive. Just play with it and find what works best for you.
Welcome to AAPK.

Re: Knives value?
I think those would generally be good. With a description of open and closed length. Describe the opening / closing snap of each blade (especially if older/ used). If I sold on Ebay...I'd start the bidding very low (or at $0) and have them end on Saturday or Sunday evenings. There are tons of people who keep open searches on Ebay for specific brands and knives. Good knives will be found.ryanscrisp wrote: ↑Mon Apr 20, 2020 11:53 pm So what images do I need. High quality left, right and zoom of the tang stamp good enough?

Re: Knives value?
As long as the knives are at least average condition I would say at least 3 times what you have been offered. If great condition, maybe the 2300 number you mentioned. Hard to tell without seeing them.
400 dollars is a crazy insulting offer unless they are beaters.

$400 would be a good price if they spent the last 5 years in a bucket of water or a flooded tackle box.
to AAPK, we hope you can post some pictures of them.

Your auctions will be the most successful with clear, sharp pictures from all angles, including the back. Ebay lets you post 10 pictures with no extra charge, so I usually put in 8-10 pictures. In your description, be sure to mention blade wobble (side to side play), if any, and the snap of each blade, because you can't really judge these factors from the pictures. You might want to study the ebay auctions of some of the regular knife sellers, so you can get the hang of it. I always start my auctions at $1 and let them run for 10 days ending on a Saturday or Sunday night. As others on this thread have mentioned, it is a bit of work, but well worth it if you are looking to maximize your return.ryanscrisp wrote: ↑Mon Apr 20, 2020 11:53 pm So what images do I need. I don't sell on eBay (or even buy for that matter), but I do follow auctions to get a feel of what particular knives are selling for, and I've noticed there are tricks of the trade for getting top dollar. Ending on weekend evenings are one thing I've noticed too, along with good pictures of the important aspects of a knife. Following some auctions of knives similar to what you're selling, first, would be my recommendation. Good luck!
