The Ohio Gun Collectors Show was canceled this weekend. Ohio governor has issued a request that indoor events be canceled. Wanamachers website today still shows the Tulsa Show is a go.I haven't heard anything about the Dalton show,I have tables for both shows.

Someone has to say it, so I will. IMHO the whole thing is an overhyped media (including social media) induced panic. By far more people die annually from the regular old influenza virus, car wrecks, etc. than the COVID-19 virus.

Yesterday I heard an interview with a CDC spokesman, a medical doctor. I listened to the entire interview. The “jist” of it was the doctor said (I’m paraphrasing), as we are getting more data the COVID-19 estimated death rate is decreasing. Based on early case data we thought the death rate was about 6 %. Then as we got more data we thought it was 3%. Now based on a larger sample size we believe it may be 1% or less. To date there have been just over 4000 deaths attributed to COVID-19. To put that in perspective, there have been over 27,000 deaths from influenza so far this season, and influenza has a mortality rate around 0.1%. Your chances are far greater of catching and dying from the flu than from COVID-19.

In summary the doctor was trying to put the disease into perspective relative to your chances of getting the flu.

What did the news media make of that? Here’s the headline they used “COVID-19 Ten Times More Deadly Than the Flu!”

The swine flu, the bird flu, Ebola, etc were all deadly but there wasn’t the level of media hyped hysteria that we are seeing with COVID-19. Events weren’t cancelled. The economy gave them a big ho-hum. So what’s different now? (That’s a rhetorical question - I know the answer.)

Wash your hands frequently, stay home if you’re sick, etc. But don’t cancel every gathering of two or more people! Jeez!

The Dakota Territory Gunshow scheduled for this weekend in Mitchell, SD has been canceled per the
DTGCA website.

A year from now we will know a lot more but in the meantime, I am in my 70s with a compromised immune system and my only child, a man in his 40s with a kidney transplant, are at risk for severe illness and perhaps death from this virus. Most people don't have to worry, but some of us do. I prefer not to express any binding opinions at this early juncture, beyond this statement.

From what I've been able to glean, two factors contribute greatly to the seriousness of the Corona Virus threat; It can be transmitted quite easily by simply breathing the same air that an infected person has exhaled (no cough or sneeze required), and people who have no symptoms (yet) can already be shedding the virus and thus be contagious to others. That's what's behind the calls to cease all large gatherings of people in one place. Health officials anticipate that the virus will continue to spread, they are simply trying to slow it's exponential spread in order to hopefully prevent the nations hospitals from being completely overwhelmed to the point that there aren't enough ventilators or trained personnel available to meet the life or death needs of the sick.

Like Cal, I find myself in a high risk group since I have severe emphysema, diabetes, and coronary artery disease. If this is some devious plot to control me, it has worked to perfection because I'm going to do everything I can to limit my exposure. Thankfully I've got a very sweet daughter who is willing to go to the grocery and run errands for her mom an me.

I just got in from the Bastrop Show and I can report a very sparse crowd. I heard two reports on the New Braunfels Show and both reported lively crowds there. Sold a few knives today and bought none so not really a bad day at all.

The fear and panic in the stores are ridiculous, but you gentlemen are correct: This virus can be deadly to many people, and by slowing the rates of infection we are allowing our healthcare workers to help those people who need it the most.
Panic is counterproductive.
But caution is wise.

Birch Run Gun & Knife in Birch Run, MI cancelled this weekend. Too bad they were still running television commercials for it this morning. Before hitting the road today I went on line and saw it was cancelled. Apparently, they cancelled it at the last minute. Many dealers come from long distances for this show, and I bet a number of them made the trip for nothing.
