True Red Bone

Post by Forensic Jim »

While at Parkers Show, I spent some time at Jim Sargents table looking at his knives. I now know what a huge difference there is between red bone and what I was thinging were red bone scales. Jim showed me several red bone knives that once you see them, there's no mistaking them for red bone. All these other knives that I've thought were red bone were actually just bone or brown bone with a slight hint of red around the outer parts of the scales and at the end of the bolsters. Also, the differences in green bone can be vastly different.

I agree...

I have always thought that TRUE red bone (Case) should have an even red color...BLOOD red...throughout at least 90% of the front handle and the major part of the back handle.

I believe that the front handle on Case knives is usually a bit different in color due to the extra hafting that is required becuase the shield is inlayed into the front handle.

Extra buffing can bring out different colors in bone handles. I found in collecting Case knives in the 70's that I could lightly buff the bone handles of mint knives and it would often bring out a deeper red color (on some knives) a deeper chestnut/yellow color (on some) and no change at all (on some).

You are right Jim, sometimes it's hard to tell. But when you see one with real red color there's no mistaking it.

Here are a couple of Redbones I sold and kick myself (hard) every time I look at the pictures.

A True Redbone is a beautiful knife!!

OK, here are a couple that could be mistaken as Redbone.

Actually they're Brownbone.

I have seem Jim Sargent two to three times a year for the last ten or twelve years, he is very willing to teach and will also help you appraise or look at a knife you may want to buy, even from another dealer. A square shooter. I have purchased a few knives from him and never been disappointed. His tables are some of the first ones I go to.

He really is a gentleman and was willing to spend time just going over some of the questions I had to help educate me. Just a real asset to the knife community.

Jim you and I have talked about this Trapper at the show and We along with Mr. Risner decieded that it was brown bone.

My Pictures have a come a long way since I first started posting here. I tried to get this good enough that you can see the "Razors Edge" (not the etch but the actual edge) on the blades.

Nice knife Bama! Good pictures too!!

A fine example of brownbone that could be mistaken for red.

Duffy, I wish I still had them! That was the cleanest XX Muskrat I have ever seen!

We debated this subject not too long ago on this forum, and I also agree with Jim Sargent, Knifeaholic, and forensic Jim. The term "redbone" is way over used.

Red Bone

Post by Forensic Jim »

I have been sorely mistaken on some of my knives and even with the advice of some of my knifer friends of what we thought were red bone. Once you see the real thing there is no mistaking it. There is absolutely no brown what so ever in a pretty red bone knife.

I am going to have to check that out. I am like Jim and don't think I have ever looked at them side by side.
