How can I resist? James Cooper got the patent in 1905, and assigned it directly to Robeson, probably for a few bucks. I used a Robeson HJ as the model for my first HJ revival model. The Robeson pic is from ebay, but I bought the knife. With it is a pic of my first HJ contract knife, from Queen.

The Carman punch was patented by one of Napanochs owners, in 1908. Winchester used it for a while when they bought Napanoch out, ca.1919!

Thanks Charlie for the tutorial on the Carman Punch. I never knew of that one. I'm sure it would have been mighty handy in the tack and saddle days.
It really shows how inventive Americans were back then with very little machinery.
