File sets? What do you recommend?

I would like to try doing some decorative file work and would appreciate recommendations on what file sets to buy and where to find them? Also, are there any online tutorials that cover file work. Thanks.

I recommend that you purchase a Fileworking DVD by Dwayne Dushane. You can buy the files he recommends, but if you bought 3 of each that he uses you can spend $100 to $300. 1 way to lessen cost is to use 1/8 inch round chainsaw files, I must of filed chain a few thousand times.

Anyway the DVD is about $35.00 and is very much worth the cost.

MM is likely to cruise by with his recommendations. I stay away from Harbour Freight and Chinese files. I always bought quality files, Oregon is one brand if I remember correctly, unless those are Chinese by now. I had and have a lot of files and haven't purchased any for at least a year.

no cheap files, they won't cut or last. stick with the big names, oregon, nickolsen, etc.

Amen to Nicholson ! Also, for detail work, Brownell's sells a set of Eze-Lap diamond needle files that are a good value for the money. And the Swiss pattern Barrette files are nice, but you gotta have deeper pockets than mine !

Speaking of Nicholson - I've been looking for a Magi-Cut, by Nicholson for a few months now. Hardware stores up here say they're discontinued, and I can't find 'em on the internet. If anybody knows where I can buy one, I'd appreciate it.

I tried 'em, but no go. Mebbe the kid at the hardware store was right. I gotta buncha cousins, scattered all over the states - maybe they can find some old stock.

I ordered a copy of the MSC catalog, tho' - so it was a much appreciated tip.

This is an excellent source for many DVD's, these are the guys that make the DVD's. If you read the bottom of the page, some excellent DVD's are in the works. This is the outfit I recomend.

nicholson. simmonds, and oregon brands are best. There isn't really a "set" you can buy that I know of. I get a set of needle files, a few triangular, half round, round, and flat files. I also keep three sizes of oregon chainsaw files on hand. single cut files are best, double cuts chew the steel up too bad.

I got some Grobet files from K & G (IIRC). They are expensive, but not nearely as costly as a cheap file.
The Grobet are some of the best I have used. I have a lot of Nicholson because they are available locally. The only problem with the Grobet is that they don't have the range of shapes that Nicholson has.

Thank you for all the helpful replies. I'll put the DVD on my Christmas list. I guess I'm a cheap, old retired guy, but $40 seems alot to pay for a DVD. I'm going to a knife show in Eugene, OR on Saturday. Maybe someone will have files for sale at the show. Has anyone tried the file sets sold by KnifeKits.com ?
