Hibbert Spencer Bartlett Folding Hunter

a folding hunter marked Hibbert Spencer Bartlett....Knife is 4 1/2 inches 2 blades both marked...... has a buffalo head shield on the handles... believe to be Utica Nessmuk pattern Knife is used seems to be original....Would like to know more about knife?

I think this pattern is a Jumbo Trapper rather than a Folding Hunter. Neat old knife but i do not know who made it. Certainly could have been Utica.

I can see why it would be called a Large Trapper.....I heard once that it made by Utica in the Nessmuk pattern maybe someone will have the answer......What is the Nessmuk pattern?

It's been awhile but thought I would revisit the Jumbo trapper!. The name Nessmuk and the shield of a bison, muck oxen ect.. got me wondering what type of animal this shield represents!....After consulting msteele thread I found out that creature was a Wood Drake also the pen name of
George Washington Sears a sportswriter for Forest and Stream

Very sweet knife and cool info. Utica used these shields, could have made this knife too (edit-* I see you stated that in the OP.)

My knife has beautiful bone handles no cracks and the blades has been sharpened shows some wear snaps well overall a very good knife to be
one hundred years old... Funny I was thinking the shield would represent a musk oxen type beast but "Nessmuk" the penname for G.W.Sears is actually the name of his childhood friend meaning Wood Drake quite different from the bull-head shield....Nessmuk is a knife pattern great information..
I would like to see more Nessmuk knives ... Utica made these knives for other companies if any show them would be great to show them...

Here is a snippet from an early Utica catalog of the earliest version of the Nessmuk they produced and a few from my collection. Catalog description says ebony but it is a vulcanized fiber material similar to early swiss army knives I think. They also made some in genuine stag! I believe they began making the two bladed, non-locking version you have either before Remingtons R1123 or in order to compete with the R1123...

The large camp knives were "Kit Carson" knives and some are even stamped so on the blades! There is even an elephant toe with the bison shield.

The jumbo camp knives measure a whopping 4 3/4 inches so not quite 5 inches but much larger than your average "scout" utility knife.

I dont mean to derail this thread too much from the HSB bison head trappers but just wanted to show Utica probably made the Blish Mize knife too! Here are catalog snippets from Blish Mize and Utica for the elephant toe.
