German knives

I've got a special interest in knives marked Solingen or made in Germany, fixed blades or pocket knives. Are there others on this forum like that? What German knives and manufacturers "trip your trigger"?

Boker is my favorite, but I also recently started chasing Klaas, Schlieper, Herder, Hartkopf & Co, and a few others...

There seems to be alot of people "chasing" them. Just looking on ebay you can tell that. I'm always looking for bargains on these knives, and they're hard to come by.

Bulldog Brand is my choice although I like Bokers as well and Hubertus.

RWB, you are correct about the prices.
I used to buy old Solingen made knives regularly for less than $20. Nowadays it's tough to find that kind of deal online.
People are really begin to appreciate the craftsmanship of these fine old knives, and the increasing prices show it.

Rangerbluedog I agree the deals on German made (and specifically Solingen, Germany made) knives are harder to find as time goes by. I suspect the fact that so much knife production that was formerly done in Solingen has now been moved to Pacific Rim countries plays a big part in the increase in prices. As the old song goes; "Don't it always seem to go, you don't know what you've got till it's gone?" Sure seems to apply here.


RWB I've been picking up German made knives when I can for years. They are not the primary focus of my collecting efforts but I do have a fondness for them and enjoy grabbing one now and then.

I’m partial to Eye Brand and Böker, especially the older ones, but I don’t have many. I know you’ve been here a while but just in case you haven’t found it there are subforums here dedicated to just about all of the major German brands, so you’ll find a lot of posts there. viewforum.php?f=55 Just scroll through until you find the ones you want.

I have been collecting German knives for a long time. I got into it because prices were lower for German than for British or American even though knife quality can be comparable.
I prefer the vintage knives of any make if of high quality. Four blade senators are one of my most favorite patterns.

Am very partial to some of the German brands such as Solingen Bokers. But my greatest interest is in the Solingen Bulldog brand which ran from
1978 thru the mid 2000s. They often display exceptional craftsmanship. The original Bertram [Hen& Rooster] knives from 1865 to 1980 were considered by AG Russell to be the finest traditional pocket knives made anywhere in the world. He intervened to try to save it from bankruptcy but did not succeed. Today's Hen & Roosters are a different knife.

Thanks to Roland (kj) I've become addicted to C.F. Kayser. I think I have about 10 now. If I'm not mistaken I think he told me that he had several hundred at one point (I hope I'm not exaggerating).

I’m a big fan of Solingen knives. I especially like older Boker jumbo Congress knives. Those are some of my favorite using knives of all. Also, eye brands, especially the eye brand copperheads. It’s been a while since I’ve had a Bulldog, but the ones I had were very nice.

Of course, most of us, me included, love the vintage ones. But I must say, the wife got the boys and I new (2010 to be exact) Solingen Boker two blade folding hunters with smooth appaloosa bone for Christmas last year. They are as well made and solid as any knife from any maker I’ve ever had. Top notch all the way.

I don't have very many german knives but I like them pretty well. I like the style and design of most german made large stockmans, also frosted etches are cool.
