Re: What does the term "sleeveboard" refer to?
It is a term that describes a knife that is narrow on one end and wider on the other end. It can have a ny blade configuration such as a whittler or a pen. Here are a couple of examples. Not my knives unfortunately.

Greg gives good examples.
The term refers to the old days when a shaped 'board' was placed into
shirt sleeves to iron out wrinkles .....

Some examples. Do shirts still get ironed?
My mother even ironed my blue jeans.
Until she discovered these pant leg stretchers somewhere around 1960 or so. Put 'em in the pants (one in each leg of course) while the pants were still damp and hang 'em on the clothes line. Ta da. No wrinkles when dry.

I don't remember about socks, towels & underwear but sheets, heck yes. That was all part of being a good housekeeper. These days that's all seen as wasted effort. Besides you, who sees your underwear for Pete's sake.

I iron my all shirts (t-shirts and sweat shirts excluded) and work pants. Jeans, underwear, socks - no.

Re: What does the term "sleeveboard" refer to?
I KNEW you guys would know. Your answers make perfect sense. Very interesting!
This came up when researching the difference between 63 pattern and 79 pattern knives. Then I started looking at the difference between a 79 and an 079 and voila!, the term sleeve board popped up.
Thanks for sharing your knowledge!!

Re: What does the term "sleeveboard" refer to?
So I'm guessing this one would be an example of sleeveboard?

Re: What does the term "sleeveboard" refer to?
It just might be the angle of the pic, but I would say no. Both ends look to be of equal size.rugmar wrote:So I'm guessing this one would be an example of sleeveboard?
If one end is more slender than the other, then yes.

Re: What does the term "sleeveboard" refer to?
If by some chance you're a NASCAR fan, this will make perfect sense. Darlington Raceway. Home of the "Southern 500". The track is smaller on one end because the land owner didn't want his minnow pond disturbed when they built the track. That's why one side has a larger turn radius than the other side.rugmar wrote:As far as pocket knives are concerned, what does the term "sleeveboard" mean?
If you can find a google image taken overhead, you can clearly see the difference. You can see the pond in the illustration in the lower left corner.

Re: What does the term "sleeveboard" refer to?
It refers to the shape of the knife handle's resemblance to the ironing board a laundry used to iron shirt sleeves.

Re: What does the term "sleeveboard" refer to?
Great examples shown. In profile the knife should have rather straight sides and taper from bolster to bolster. Any distinct swells or curves would disqualify the knife from the sleeveboard designation. I did a google search for images of sleeveboard knives and oddly enough nearly all images matched the definition.
If I have seen further it is by standing on the shoulders of giants.

Here's a better angle. It's a Case and the blade is stamped 079.

Nice knife and one of my favorites. Used to have one like it, an 82079-1/2 that I carried some, mostly on Sundays. Long story, but the TSA got it.
