Does your chewing gum lose its flavor on the bedpost overnight?

Wait... I meant does your knife lose its fine edge just hanging out and not doing anything? I swear, I have knives that seem to get a little duller after a day or two, not having cut anything. Just enough to want a light stroke or two on some kind of hone. Anyone? Also- Does your non-stainless steel stink? I can smell 1095 from at least two feet away.

I’ve noticed the same thing about the knives dulling themselves. I was afraid to mention it to anybody. Glad I’m not alone.

I have never experienced knives dulling in a day or two, but I used to carry a Spyderco Endura in the pocket of my turn out gear ( I was a career firefighter for 34 years) and it would dull without use after a while. FACT!

Years ago this same topic was discussed at length in Bladeforums. Metallurgists, chemical engineers and others discussed steel at the molecular level and whether changes in crystalline structure can change over time, etc.
I think the outcome was 'yes steel in a very thin edge can change on it's own but not enough to make a discernible difference. However plenty of guys posted as have people here, that a knife just sharpened to a fine edge does get duller over time even though not used.

The odor of 1095, especially if it has patina, is the primary reason that I use Frog Lube to coat all my carbon blades. Not only does it protect the blade but gives them that minty fresh smell.

Well I'll swan - that's two new ones in the same week! First it was not allowing your knife to "fly shut". Now it's sharp knives going dull without use.

What'll they think of next?! What's this world coming to?

Well, to be literal, carbon steel does lose sharpness after a while if unused. Oxidation of the steel can never be eliminated 100%, so when a very thin and fine piece of steel like the apex gets even a tiny bit (as in unnoticeable to the naked eye) of oxidation it will dull slightly.

Actually, I found the opposite. I will sharpen a knife and it's "ok", but leave it for a couple days, and I swear it seems sharper somehow?

Count me in the camp where gremlins sneak in at night and drag my knife blade across the basement floor. I thought it was only me that kept needing to touch up a carbon blade because it seemed to lose its' edge just sitting there.

I noticed it mostly on a well used peachseed Schrade stockman that I have. I finally got tired of carrying it due to having to hone it everytime after it sitting for any length of time. It would get hair-popping sharp, and then I swear it would go dull on its' own.

And that carbon does get a smell on it, doesn't it?
