Should I or shouldn't I

I'm repairing a 51 year old paring knife for my mother in law , said it is her favorite knife. It is a Imperial Veri Sharp paring knife. I ask her how can she can cut with it , it's never been sharpend. Any way the question is should I epoxy the handle and put in the pins or just put the pins in and peen the heads ,also should I use tung oil on the handle or rub vegitable oil in the handle.

Epoxy will help keep moisture from getting between the scales and blade. Use it.

Epoxy it, sharpen it, mineral oil on the wood. You’ll make her very happy I think.

Yup, epoxy, pins, and sharpen it. I might even try cleaning up the blade with some 400-600 sand paper.

Yes use epoxy and pins, I also epoxy the pins to help hold in place and keep out moisture, and I would suggest she never put it in a dish washer, wash by hand in hot soapy water , dry and oil with your veg oil. Terry

I wouldn't use vegetable oil on the handles, it'll turn rancid and get pretty stinky. Mineral oil is your best bet as it's food grade oil.

Another option on walnut and other woods is Birchwood Casey True Oil gunstock finish. Very durable stuff, impervious to gun cleaning solvents. I usually do 3 coats with a light steel wool buff between each. Good advice to not put the finished product into a dishwasher.

Thanks fellas, never had to repair a paring knife. Didn't 't know what to use since she uses it for food. She don't have a dish washer.

For the handle - linseed oil. It is good to stay for a few days immersed in the oil. Or a mixture of linseed oil, pine turpentine oil and wax. The products are mixed in a water bath.

I second linseed oil I first heard of this oil in 1968 in 7th grade shop class. Our project was a cutting board each of us made one and finished it in linseed oil I still use it 50 years latter.
