Restored Grandfather's Case Stockman

Post by SteveXX »

Hi All,

My grandfather passed several years ago and I recently acquired some of his pocket knives. A Case Stockman from 1981 and two Old Timers. I always remember him carrying a pocketknife when I was a kid and he used this stockman.

They were in pretty rough shape when I got them with a lot of oxidation on the blades. So I tried to clean them up. I think they turned out pretty good for the condition they were in when I received them.

Here's the one I remember most the Case Stockman. The shield is missing and I sent pics of the knife and an email to Case and they did send me a replacement shield, but it's the wrong one and don't fit. The shield should be the circle "Case" shield and in order to get that Case said I would need to send them the knife for repair :x

Anyway here's the stockman. I only wish I had taken some before pics to compare.

Thanks for looking

Nice work Steve. By the way, you could always post a "Want-Ad" in that section asking for a shield that will fit your knife. Someone's bound to have one. If I had one I'd send it to you for free. ::nod::

You did a nice job on your knife. Surprised Case couldn't come up with a shield, but shields are tricky. I'll tell you my experience. A while back I contacted Case and told them I was having an impossible time finding the oval type shields for knives (pic) from the 1980's and almost had to find a junk knife in order to get one. I told them I wasn't asking for a hand out and would be happy to pay for the shields and the postage involved. They thanked me for my inquiry and promised me a response within a few days and they did just that. I got a very nice email from them saying they had contacted their supplier and they could no longer order the shields, even for themselves. They suggested I continue to look for knives in need of repair to get them. There are so many sizes and types of shields you'll think you have just what you need and son of a gun it won't fit. When I get time Ill share a tip I was given on making a shield. Good luck on a shield. If anyone has any of these oval shields they want to sell please contact me. I need 2 of them.

Thanks for the info Mike! I'd be real excited to be able to replace the shield with the right one.

Good insight, thanks Bob. Case was a pleasure to deal with and they did try. Just like you said the shields are tricky. Case sent me one in hopes it might fit and offered to do a replacement if I send them the knife, which I appreciate. The knife has a lot of sentimental value to me which has me hesitant to send it off on a voyage.
