What's wrong with this knife?

The W.R. Case & Sons Cutlery Company has a very rich history that began in 1889 when William Russell (“W.R.”), Jean, John, and Andrew Case began fashioning their knives and selling them along a wagon trail in upstate New York. The company has produced countless treasures and it continues to do so as one of the most collected brands in the world.

What's wrong with this knife?

Post by TwoFlowersLuggage »

I did not bid on this 5120R SSP primarily because there didn't seem to be much action on it, and that sort of scared me off. I can see the obvious stuff - the bail is missing, the tip of the blade is bent a little, the rear bolster pin seems a bit weird and the stag looks either very worn or buffed to within an inch of its life (or both). But, it's still a stag-handled Case knife, and I would have expected it to sell for $25+ at least. So, please help educate me, what else is wrong with this knife?

As a non-folder person, what stands out to me is the following --

the scales look shrunken, pulling away from the bolsters on each end
the scales look dried out, almost as if it had been left in a hot car for months
the bail is missing
the blades look buffed to within an inch of their life
the middle pin "appears" both loose and proud

I would pass on it just from initial impression alone as I've seen much better examples that were older than that knife.

Zz's assessment is on target. Condition is everything and that knife has seen better days for sure. Nothing much there to attract a collector. If you like that pattern it would make an EDC, but as pointed out there are better candidates to be had.

OK - I get it isn't a collector-grade knife, but it still seems like more than a $9 knife. I suppose at that point we've agreed it's a hooker and we're just haggling on price... ::sotb::
