Recent Case '65 folding hunter purchase.

I was looking around and reading all the back posts on this board, and discovered that I have bought the folding hunter that was featured in the auction to raise money for AAPK here http://www.allaboutpocketknives.com/kni ... php?t=4679 I had recently posted some photos of this knife on the other knife boards that I have registered with. This knife was represented to me by the seller here in Alabama as a 1964 built knife. I saw "Case XX" and nothing else, and assumed he was not pulling my leg. However after posting my pictures, I was informed that what I had was NOT a Case XX tang stamped knife, and the Case XX stamp would be stacked vertically, not stamped horizontally as my knife is. I was told that it was a Case XX USA 1965-1969 knife; however as the photos show, there is no USA stamped beneath the horizontal Case XX stamping, and no room for one to ever be there. Can some of you Case knife collecting gurus please inform me as to what I actually have bought here? If this is a 1964 knife, I paid somewhat more than it was worth, based upon the rust flaws on the backsprings (which I have removed, fairly easily, looks much better now). IF it is a 1965-1969 era knife, I was royally soaked, especially after seeing how much this knife dealer actually paid for this knife from the auction. I really like this '65 pattern hunter, even if I did get screwed, it's still a really great knife, among my very favorites of all the knives that I have bought over the years. Here's the photos. Appreciate any and all information you guys can give me.

it's looks like an xx frame. it was in use into the usa period. they first drilled the bolster in 1964 i think. are you sure the u.s.a. is'nt hidden under the bolster? someone probably knows more or better.

I gotta go with Johnnie on this one. It looks like a USA stamped knife on a xx era frame. It wouldn't be the first time part of a tang stamp was hidden under a bolster.

I'll tell you what, I had several knife people look at the knife and every one of them said it was NOT a U.S.A. but just the small XX stamping.
They ALL said, that due to the drilled bolster, frame and stamping, that it is a transition and had to have been made in 1964. Bamafamtan bought it from me and it is a good knife.

Yeah, fifty bucks would be a steal on a knife of this quality!

I hate to admit what I put into it, because nobody wants to look stupid ya know

, but here goes: Eighty dollars cash and a trade, a Schatt & Morgan English Jack (the one with the purple looking bone handles) that I had $65 in. I had bought a Queen Burnt Bone farmers jack for $45, traded it and $20 boot on the Schatt in an earlier swap. The Schatt had one scale that was nearly gray instead of purple, so it was probably not worth the full value that I've seen them go for on Ebay, but still easily worth the $65. So, $80 + $65 = $145.00. Sargent's knife book values a 1964 XX Model at $175 in mint condition, a 1965-1969 USA at $125. The $80 cash alone would have been a fair profit on the knife. Sooooo, if it is indeed a 1964 knife, the price was sorta fair and I won't feel burned too badly, but if it is USA, I overpaid. I'll be studying more and asking questions here before picking up any more vintage Case items.

Where can I find some more information about the "small XX" stamping? The more I can learn about these things, the smarter I'll be. Any information appreciated greatly.

If this knife had a XX blade (transition or not) the stamping would look like this, from ca 1960

What you see on this blade appears to be the top half of a later Case XX USA mark, which looks like this

i also recently purchased a folding hunter. a 1970 10 dot. heres a pic of the knife and of the tang stamp.
