Hello Knifer Friends!

I need your help if you have just a minute.

Sorry to keep throwing this off topic stuff into the general knife discussion forum and taking away from the knife fun

1. I'm checking to make sure the server is pulling it's weight... Have you noticed if the forums have been loading slower on your browser over the past month or so?

2. Do you ever get logged out unexpectedly? Have you been logged out while posting something (That would be waaay too frustrating to allow )? - is the auto-login working for you? Do you get logged out when you leave AAPK and come back later? Do you have to log in every time you visit AAPK? How long has that been the case?

3. Are there any other problems you have noticed that might need attention?

Did have problem a few weeks back. Solved. Ditto for logout then. Solved.
Speed: does seem a bit slower at times. I attribute to forum growth.
Real time difference between a 1/4 second and a 1/2 second is more than livable.
Sir: when you have a chance some day would you please explain how to maximize posted photos.
A nice feature might be a save or storage function for posts while poster is gone to another site for info regarding post. I have lost my original doing that but attributed it to a short between headsets.
As it has been your site is fantastic.

pretty much the same, was getting logged off a few weeks ago, but it seems to have stopped.

I've noticed that to Moss. A few times I've started a post, left to check a detail elsewhere, and then had to start over on my return. This can be avoided by copying the message to your clip board so that it can be pasted back later. Sometime I compose my longer messages in word and then paste it in when done. s-k

I haven't had any problems. Loading speed is great for me, but I can't compare it to the past.

I don't log in automatically, and don't know if I'm logged out if I forget to do so. Keep forgetting to check also.

Only minor irritation is that I stll haven't got the hang of posting photos so they appear in the order I want. I'm just a slow learner I guess. Oh.....seems I always approach the log button from above on the scroll, open the drop down menu from "Other", and then have to sneek up on it again from below.

Hey again Moss,

I may be missing something, but are you refering to the images attached to the posts? Those are maximized by clicking on them. They go to a new window and can be fully maximized by maximizing that window and/or clicking again with the newest internet explorer release. If you have an older explorer, you can mouse over the bottom right of the image and wait for a box to appear and then click. Mozzilla and others may differ slightly.

Am I on the right track with what you're asking?

The save post thing is noted. I think that is do-able, but it will likely take me a while to get to it. If you haven't noticed, I'm a bit slow at getting to a lot of things .

1. About once in every 50 times, when I move from one post to another, or back to the index, I'll get a 504 error. I always figured that was on my end, tho'. I've got a hi-speed connection, so I thought it was rather odd - but it's so infrequent, it's not really an issue.

2. The auto-login has never worked for me. Not really a hassle, it only takes a few seconds to log in. I dunno if that's javascript, or a php function ?

3. From the Home page, when I go to the AAPK stores, I can't find a link, to select a "particular" store. I hafta scroll around, until I find a listing, for that store, in order to get there.

4. When I get ready to leave the AAPK stores, there's no link (that I can see), to get back to the forums.

5. I do get logged out, automatically, anytime I'm idle, for more than about 15 minutes - I figured that was how you wrote the code. Again, logging-in isn't a problem, for me.

None of the above is a big deal, as far as I'm concerned - it all works smoothly, 99% of the time. I also prowl around on BladeForums, and your code is way better, than their's.

Those are some good points JR. Thanks. I'll look into all of 'em. I can't take credit for the forum software. The bulk of the code was written by the phpbb team. I just modify and upgrade it from time to time. BladeForums uses vBulletin software, KnifeForums uses FusionBB software. I do not know of any large forums that did not start with an existing software program -> Just some boring info for ya.

I used to get logged out unexpectedly while posting, but I log in automatically now and that works fine. Auto-login is the way to go.

I really appreciate the easy photo posting system of AAPK, which is the only way that my lazy, erratic dial-up system allows photos.

Oh... Do you use photo editing software wb? 750 pixels wide is a good size IMO. Quality only needs to be as good as a monitor can display. You can get a nice looking sizeable image that is not very big in terms of bites.

If you are looking for a better looking inline image (the one that shows in the body of your post), you would have better results with an image that is 400px wide shrunk down by a good photo editing software. Pictures that are larger than 400 px wide get thumbnailed by the forum software, and it often distorts them a bit. I think photoshop and other software does a better job of shrinking images. Only problem is they can not be maximized for a bigger view. I'd stick with 750 pixels wide or so at 72 dpi.

Hope some of that makes sense. I do not know as much as I should about the subject.

You can get an email from any thread you subscribe to, are you sure the boxes are unchecked for each post of each thread? It's the bottom one and it needs to be unchecked for every post in the thread. It's this one, Notify me when a reply is posted I believe every post in the thread needs to be unchecked.

Hi Ken,

Unless I'm mistaken, yours is easy. You are likely getting those messages because you hit the "watch this topic for replies" link or the "Notify me when reply is posted" check box.

When you get those emails, click the link, go to the thread where the link brings you and click the "stop watching this topic" link. Make 100% sure the email is from AAPK. 3rd parties can send fake emails that look like they are coming from AAPK. They do it a lot with eBay and PayPal. I have not seen this happen here yet, but it is possible. They do it to try and get your personal info at ebay and paypal. Not much to gain doing it on our forum, so it is very unlikely someone would go to the trouble. Forward one of the emails to me and I'll verify it for ya.
