Has anyone seen one with a round shield toward the lower bolster and the normal shield also.

If I am not mistaken, I believe that Cattaraugus made a king of the woods with a compass in the handle, which would explain the shield and the round insert in the handle. Any Cattaraugus value guide should have a photo in it.

Thanks Kiferbros, I looked in all of my books and could not find this knife. I don't have a book on just Cattaraugus. This shield is a nice round shield maybe the compass was broken and replaced.

Again Thanks

Well I am at work, but I will look in my books when I get home to try to give you a better answer, unless someone beats me to it. if I find it I will try to post a scan of it as well.

I checked Ritchie and Stewart's reprint and find no Kings with a compass.
Is there a pattern number? I always think that the ones without a pattern number were assembled from parts bought when the factory closed. I have never been able to prove it so just MO.
Can you post a photo?

It may be possible to post a picture later the knife is a friends and not with me. He purchased it at a auction with 30 day return policy, it was purchased from a picture the picture did not show the lower shield. He wants to keep it if it is right. His 30 days is getting close.

Well I could not find anything to support what I was thinking about a “king of the woods” with a compass, sorry. That’s not to say that they didn't, I just can’t provide evidence that they did, maybe someone else can. Cattaraugus did make knives with compasses in the handles(see pic 42209 w/Compass) . This is something for a more knowledgeable catt collector than me. For the life of me I seem to recall seeing a king with a compass but I could be way off and thinking of something else. Sorry I couldn’t be of more help.

Thanks Kiferbros, I also think that I have seen a King of the Woods with the round shield on the lower half of the front handle in a book but could not find it. Thanks for trying. Someone will know.

stockman, is the rear shield blank? how large. that compass looked kinda big. on some knives i have seen two shields, one for the knife co. and one for advertising or comemmoratives.

Hello jonet143, It ia about the size of the compass, and it is blank just a nickle silver disk. I will try to get the knife back and get a scan of it.

Thanks Stockman
