Wendell Carson Swayback Trapper

Here's my idea of a beautiful knife, elegant but restrained. Just received it from Wendell Carson, who made it with stabilized box elder which I sent him. I wish my photography could show the real beauty of the wood. Wendell is a real gentleman, of the old fashioned variety, and if you're not familiar with his knives, you should check them out. This will go to my EDC rotation.

I'd like to thank everyone who has welcomed me to this forum, and given advice on my previous post.

That's absolutely gorgeous! I love box elder.

It looks more like marble than wood. Thanks for the photos.

Wendell's work is outstanding with your knife being a prime example of his craftsmanship. I agree also that he is one of the outstanding folks in our knife collecting hobby.

Here's a couple more. Two mammoth ivorys, a seacow bone, and a fossil walrus jawbone.

Chris, I think you snapped that pearl up while I was looking at it.

I may have to order one........because I'm jealous !!

Nice job showing some color in your photo of that one too, I'm sure it's even better in hand.

Those are fantastic, I have always admired Wendell's choice of handle/scale material and his bark mammoth is some of the best I have had the pleasure of holding.

Great stag on that one El Lobo !!!! I don't recognize that pattern, is it one of Wendell's older knives ?

Also, I wonder when he'll make some more of those Queens ? I think I read that he had an arraingement to make a total of 80.

This is the first I've heard of Wendell Carson. Just some great looking knives. Fran are one of those handled with ossic?

Jim, No, Wendell offers oosic, but I don't have one with those scales. I have the mammoth, Stellar Seacow bone, and walrus jawbone. Also some smooth & jigged bone.

He also offers elephant ivory, sperm whale jawbone, Hippo tooth, water buffalo horn, stag ( sambar ), baleen, and a long list of abolones & pearls.

I'm thinking of collecting his sleeveboard pens next, so I can sample all his scales at less expense.

Fran,

The stag and the chocolate brown bone are both big boys (4 1/4") with the Big Q stamp. I've had them for about 3 years. They are nice knives for sure.

Here is an older Wendell Carson in pearl, from 1981. Then a newer one in "smoked" pearl.....

I've not seen an oosic knife from him. I have seen walrus bone, Stellars Sea cow bone (extinct) and I bought a Fightn" Bull Whale Baleen handled trapper from our good buddy Bill, or El Lobo. I'll have to take some pictures of mine, I managed to get 1 or 2 in Black Lip Pearl. Here is his eBay listings, I do like that gold lip pearl muskrat, but I need to save up for a system for bluing small parts, so I must wait.

Very nice Bill !! I'm after a gold lip pearl now, but if I don't get it, I can always send Wendell an email, and ask for what I want.

Hangin' out here, I'm seeing too many great knives, and the wish list triples with each new knife I get. Gonna be hard to catch up that way !

Hello, Here's one of Mr. Carson's early knives that I traded for this weekend. Marked only Carson U.S.A. on tang. I liked the stag. It has a nice worn feel. I've never met Mr. Carson even though we live only about 20 miles apart. I pass by his home every week or two. I have three of the early Carson knives.

Jerry, That's a very nice muskrat. The stag has a worn look, and a nice mellow color. It looks ' antique.'

Can you show us photos of your other two ?
