Hibbard, Spencer, Bartlett.

Post by XX Case XX »

Would appreciate any information on this knife. This is my first HSB and I know absolutely "Zero" about this company. All comers are welcome to share in their "infinite wisdom"... ::nod::

Hibbard Spencer Bartlett was a hardware wholesaler located in Chicago from 1855 to about 1960 (at least it is written in most knife books that the cutlery sales stopped around 1960). The company became True Value.
They did not manufacture their own knives. Most of their knives were made by Ulster, Camillus, New York Knife and Schrade. Houston and Zalesky list Ulster, Camillus and Schrade; Ritchie and Stewart list Ulster and Camillus; and Levine lists Ulster, Camillus and New York Knife Co. as manufactures of knives for HSB.
I have a few HSB knives and all of them exhibit excellent workmanship.
I like the looks of yours. I am partial to the "butter and molasses" celluloid, even though I don't own one. edit: just took another look and not sure if that is exactly Butter and Mosasses celluloid, still like it anyway.

That stockman is a beauty; pretty sure it pre-dates WWII and pretty sure it is neither a Schrade nor a Camillus. My best bet is Ulster, but don't quote me on any of this.

Nice looking knife!
What is the precise closed length of the knife?
Be as accurate as possible as many patterns were only 1/16" different in size.
The length may give us a clue as to the manufacturer if it is an odd size.

Thanks to all who replied, much appreciated. I don't know the exact length of this knife as it's "in the mail and on the way". When I get it, I'll post the length even though it might be a few days from now.

Thanks again everyone... ::tu::

Here's the same knife. It's 3 1/4 inches in length.
