Restoration of a Schrade Cutlery Company 1354 1/4B

Post by orvet »

I thought I would share some pictures of a couple of knives I have restored recently.
The first is a Schrade Cut Co budding knife. It had the black celluloid handle, the Schrade Cut Co number was 1354 1/4B. It also came in a white celluloid handle.

As you can see from the pictures the celluloid on this knife was pretty well gone. No damage to the knife itself, but the celluloid was toast.

As always the first thing I did was disassemble the knife, clean the insi and sand the backsprings smooth and polished it. I replaced the handle with black bone. As most of you know bone is a natural product and has varying hardness is within a given piece. Some places absorb more dye than others and those places are darker others absorb less dye and are later colored. This all makes for a very interesting and beautiful combination when the knife is finished and polished.

As you can see the rear handle seem to absorb more dye and remained much darker than the front handle. I think the front handle is absolutely beautiful with the mottled pattern and the unique coloring.

Great job! What dye(s) do you use? I've read folks use synthetic dyes like Rit, leather dyes, and walnut hull dye. What is your technique?

Beautiful rebuild on that handsome knife, Dale, as usual.
I sure would like to come across one of those. That's a good looking knife.

Dale ,another beautiful save. I think that might be the S1354 1/4B that looks like only came only in black,on pg.105 catalog E. Seems like they changed the blade style in 1938 from this previously.

The one at the bottom of the page on the left was the previous style. My book's falling apart.Have fun at the show, hope I get to come sometime and meet you all out there in person.

Thanks guys, I am glad y'all liked it. I was quite pleased with the color of the bone.
The bone is from Culpepper, it is the black smooth bone with the radiused top.
I have found that solid color bone is rarely one solid color throughout a given piece of bone due to differences in density within the bone itself. The more dense bone absorbs less dye than the less dense bone resulting in the variations of color.
I especially like the green hues in the mark side handle of this knife.

You are correct Lyle, it is the 1354 1/4B. That was a typo on my part. ::facepalm::
