Need some Opinions

Post by JDeere7296 »

Hello All,

First time posting on this forum. I am a fairly new to knife collecting so I don't know much about what to collect. I have about 20 or so Case Trappers mostly early 80's till present. I also have ordered a Northfield Primitive bone, should be arriving at the door soon. My question is that I have some extra money, and was wondering if any of you had any ideas about what kind of knives would be good collectors. There are so many great knives to choose from, it is so hard to decide. Thanks for ya'lls help!!!

Hi and ::welcome:: to the site. I don't think there is an answer to your question as opinions will vary greatly among collectors. Sounds like you already have a great start ::nod:: . Hopefully, you will share some pics of your knives with us. Best wishes :) s-k

Hi JDeere! Welcome aboard!

I'm pretty new to the pockerknife world myself, but you have probably made an excellent choice with the Great Eastern Cutlery Northfield. They are a brand new, American company, and people around here are buying them as fast as they come out, for both collector value and just because they like them.

May I also recommend Schatt&Morgan? They have me hooked and seem to be universally regarded as great knives to both collect and use.

I'll let the other folk sing the praises of Case, Queen, Eye Brand, Boker, etc, etc, etc, ...

Thats pretty much all that goes on around here!

Here are a few of my knives, I still haven't taken any pics of my older knives that I have. I need to update my pictures. I appreciate any suggestions, I am sure there are many different opinions on what people like an don't like in a knife, that is what makes this hobby so darn addicting.

I don't think anybody could say anything negative about that bunch of knives JDeere!

I like that Case with the wharncliff! Is that a Case Classic? A Seahorse Whittler? What is the handle material? Tru-Sharp or CV? I am jealous and want details!

I'm also liking that Eye Brand Stag trapper! There just happens to be a Brown Smooth Bone Eye Brand MiniTrapper in my pocket right now!

Very cool...very cool.

Thanks guys for the comments, that is a Seahorse Whittler, I am pretty sure it is Stainless and the handles are Autumn bone with the silver script case letters. I wish I had more of the that handle material, just can't find any others. Thanks again for the great comments!!!

I've been through Kountz many times on the way up to the deer lease....my family have had a lease in Chester for 45 years now.

Small world isn't it.......thanks everyone for the comments on the knives, I'll try to take a better picture(s) of all my knives and post later. I still haven't decided on what I will get next, too many knives dancing around in my head

If you are talking about buying knives strictly for investment,I would think buying quality knives as they are issued ( from any quality knife maker). The farther a quality knife gets from its release date, generally the more expensive it will be.There are many fine knife makers ( case,GEC, Queen, canal street, etc.) to choose from, find which ones you think you like, and try one out,see what you think. This site is very good for that,as people dont just post old knives, but newer and brand new cutlery as well.It can give you an idea of what you might like to try out.Oh,and btw, ::welcome:: to the site,Im sure you'll enjoy it here and thats a pretty nice collection you have started there. ::tu::

Hi JDeere.

You have a much better start on a great collection than I ever had. There isn't a throwaway in the bunch.

I will collect just about any knife that strikes my fancy and fits my pocketbook at the same time. I have some of just about anything in every pattern imaginable. Collect what you like. If you develop a fancy for a favorite pattern then by all means jump in with both feet.

Case is the most collected. It is also the most plentiful and the easiest to find. The list is just too big.

The best suggestion that I could give you, if you haven't already done it, pick up a book or two showing the patterns and the companies. One good one is The Standard Knife Collector's Guide by Ritchie and Stewart. It lists a bunch of companies that manufacture (or used to anyway) cutlery and gives a rough estimation of values. From that you can learn the ones that are the most desirable and collectible. This is just a rough value though. Keep watch on eBay and on the many seller sites for a good feel of the market.

Once you get a good understanding of what you want, I suggest a book about what NOT to buy. Perhaps the best example of that is Counterfeiting Antique Cutlery by Gerald Witcher.

Best of all, there is just no end to the valuable information that you can get off the internet. Some of the best resources are right here on this website. There are lots of knowlegable and friendly people willing to give a hand.

Welcome to the hobby.
A life without pocketknives is dull and pointless.
