Some times things just don't work out

Post by #goldpan »

Well I was working on another aluminum handled pocket knife. I had just finished the handles. You know jigging and polishing. All I had to do was to krink the blade just a bit.... and it broke. ::doh:: Basically I was done. ::facepalm:: A beautiful Utica spear with swedging . Well I replaced the blade with an Imperial spear. And its nice..... Just not the same..

Well live and learn! All in all I now have a razor sharp user. ::tu:: Just not what I wanted. Can anybody out there fix a guy up with a swedged spear point blade with a matching spring? Even without a spring? I still have my heart set on making that knife!

Got it Phil! Thank you. I hope it works out. I really love that blade style. And looks like the same vintage too!

Dang! That was the arched stamp. ::mdm::

Any way to file a swedge on the Imp. blade?
You're making some sweet aluminum handles for sure, Randy! ::tu::

Thanks Joe ::tu:: I can try to make a swedge on that blade. But that blade is thinner than the other. ::shrug:: I'll think about a bit ::hmm::

Ouch! I know that feeling when a project goes bad in front of your eyes!

I like those aluminum covers. Are the bolsters integral with the covers? I cannot see a seam in the photos. Very good fit and finish either way.

Thanks Mel. Handles and bolsters are all one piece.

Ouch ::doh::

Still turned out fabulous. I like how you carried the jigging to the edges ::tu::

Bummer! Been there, done that. ::teary_eyes::
They say every knife maker (and knife repairman) has a box of failures.
I know it is definitely true in my case.

If that is the worse mistake you make, consider your self very fortunate! ::nod::

Thanks for the kind words Gents! Its like I had premonition or something. I had a feeling that it might break... I told myself to just be careful and give it one tap and snap.... I am very fortunate though, had it been damage to the handles two hours worth of work down the drain! It was salvaged and it looks nice and its usable ::tu:: All good in my book. And now back to looking for that perfect blade.

What did you get it out of ?

Demitri, It came out of a scout knife. The other three blades were junk. so I took the spear out and was oh so close to making the knife I wanted.

That`s what I thought ::nod::

Don`t throw the broken blade away, you can have the blade welded back together if you know someone with a TIG welder :wink:

I wish I had a tig welder. I spent 15 years in welding shop. I'd try it with a gas rig if I one. Just need the right sized tip... Some day! 8)
