Help with this Case please :)

The W.R. Case & Sons Cutlery Company has a very rich history that began in 1889 when William Russell (“W.R.”), Jean, John, and Andrew Case began fashioning their knives and selling them along a wagon trail in upstate New York. The company has produced countless treasures and it continues to do so as one of the most collected brands in the world.

Help with this Case please :)

Post by twdroppoint »

Hi there, long time no post.

I got this old Case today ... before I go Googling at length to identify it definitively, I was wondering if anyone here already knew specifically what model this is ?

The tang stamp is a little difficult to see in my pic (I camera doesn't do up close too well), but it says Case tested XX, and I attached a pic of what the tang stamp essentially matches to (the 1920's - 1940's). The knife itself is about 3 5/8 " long. There is no shield, so the reverse side looks the same as the side you can see.

Anyone identify this ? Many thanks to anyone who can help, I always appreciate it !

Case tested 63045 imitation jigged bone (black composition)(probably a contract knife made for Case) . In mint condition it books for about $150 , but yours is in the $30 - $40 range .

The term "cigar" refers to the frame configuration (equal end) . Some references also call this frame shape a "cattleman" . The term "stockman" refers to a knife with a spay blade . Your knife has a pen blade instead of a spay . I would call your knife a "cigar" pen knife .

Nice find. ::tu:: You gonna clean it up a little? I don't mean heavy buffing but my theory is rust begats more rust. A little rubbing with a pencil eraser and a light coating of oil, and a little oil in the joints does wonders!

Yeah I thought it was a nice find :)

I don't know if I'm going to clean it or not. I'm either going to sell it, or give it to my son as his "first pocket knife" lol. He's been wanting one now, and this one would be a cool one to pass along to him. Although he may not appreciate it fully yet because of his age, and he may want something with a different "look" anyways. Plus I don't collect Case specifically, I like finding bali's actually, and I'm partial to Mora knives for everyday work horse use, I have a special place in my heart for them lol :-) When I buy Case and the like it's usually because I know someone else will appreciate them and I can expand my knowledge base a little. So I'm not sure. If I sell it, I won't clean it, I'll let whoever buys it clean it as they wish and see fit, etc.
