Found a Gem in the Mail, Unexpectedly

Post by Hukk »

My son is coming in June for a 2 week visit. I have been picking out some knives for us to work on. I found 2-Bulldog 3 7/8 Viking whittler models. MAN, I got a surprise when I opened the first one up. ONE had an etch identifing it as a knife that longtime Master Cutler August Scheidtmann had worked on. ::ds:: Needless to say, that was a very nice surprise. I was going to put California Jade on as the handles, back to plan B. I guess we will work on a couple Case Saddlehorns or Bulldog Barlows as well as a nice Damascus (OK pattern welded steel) fixed blade in addition to a couple Buck 110's.

He and I are sure we will have a knife time.  I know, that's bad. We are planning a lot of stuff to do, including tanning snakeskins.

Anyhow here are 2 pictures of the backside of the Warncliffe Whittlers, showing the etch on one. Maybe I can put abalone on it, winterbottom is not my favorite.

I do not know how many of these were made.

We are planning a lot of stuff to do, including tanning snakeskins...???

In your state you need to go to a Tanning Spa to get a tan?
Good Idea to tape a diamond pattern then go under the light.
I did that on the beach one time with a LARGE PACE SIGN on my chest.
It was kool all summer.

Naw, it's always sunny in California. Don't understand spa's where there is sun. An oxymoron, like government inteligence. Just go outdoor's ::shrug::

Didn't know they came in that flavor. They come in lemon also?

Shock is a good word for it. Somehow it must have gotten mixed up with regular inventory and who knows when that was since these knives were made around 2oo3 and were likely amongst the last that August Scheidtmann worked on. Heck, they could have mixed up at the factory. I heard he retired, but he would have been in his mid or more likely late 70's when he made these. I don't recall many knives with his name on them other than the 5 blade Anglo-Saxons. I wonder if I should rehandle it in:
stag
white pearl
abalone
mamoth tusk
I guess I'm leaning to one of the last 3. I just don't like winterbottom and I bought it as a project, now it will be a different project. Oh well, I'll think on it.

I bought quite a few of their remaining inventory of Wharncliffe Whittlers a few months ago and have come across that stamp on maybe 5-10% of them. I just send them out as I come to them as well; but expect they would value at a premium to the standard production.

Thanks for the the info. I had bought them to do a knife rehandle with my son, I think we will do a couple other knives. Maybe just a saddlehorn and 1 or 2 others. I figure that it will fecth a premium in he future as well. I figure it's better to leave it as is in that case, just change my plans instead.

Hukk,
That is so cool that you work on knives with your son. ::tu::
My youngest son & I do that from time to time. It is always a great time. He is actually pretty good. He has made a few fixed blades as well.

Nothing like making knives together for male bonding.

Thanks Dale, we are both looking forward to it.
A good time is what we both anticipate. I have plenty of supplies on hand for him.

Thanks Ken, I just couln't help myself ::sneaky:: I saw a big ole target and went for it. Actually I have a friend who owns a moving company. If and when I decide to move, he'll do it for me. We've traded favors for years and he'll move everything for the cost of deisel. ::tu::
