CASE Factory Cutting Edge Angle

The W.R. Case & Sons Cutlery Company has a very rich history that began in 1889 when William Russell (“W.R.”), Jean, John, and Andrew Case began fashioning their knives and selling them along a wagon trail in upstate New York. The company has produced countless treasures and it continues to do so as one of the most collected brands in the world.

CASE Factory Cutting Edge Angle

Post by zp4ja »

Just curious if anyone knows what the common CASE Factory Cutting Edge Angle is in degrees?

I assume this may vary by years/era or possibly even knife pattern. I have a few CASE EDCs I will sharpen up as needed. Most of the unsharpened (as of yet) I carry would be XX to mid 70's. I normally use a stone to sharpen my knives but I may use my Lansky first so I do not scratch up the blades or vary too much from the factory angle. I like the factory angle for general use whatever degrees it might be.

Any ideas?

Thanks and Regards, Jerry

More than likely 20deg. Put one of the knives on your Lansky at 20deg and take a few strokes, then look at the edge with a magnifying glass or in really good light and you will see if it's too steep or too shallow. Having some oil on your stone helps to make the edge of the sharpening angle visible, at least it does for me.

I have taken 2 factory tours.. At the sharpening station, knives are free hand sharpened on a wheel with no guide but the persons eye.. I asked both times and was told "somewhere between 22-25 deg" !! The best they could eye-ball it.. Hope this all makes sense.. John :D

Here is a trick from ole Phil........

Make a few marks on the edge with a sharpie, then make a couple of light stokes to see what is removed!
